Inmate to die for burning woman to death in trunk

Daniel Wilson let Lutz out briefly before he ordered her back in the trunk, set the gas tank on fire and left her to die.

It was the second time Wilson walked away from someone who would die as a result of his actions.

Wilson, now 39, faces execution Wednesday for Lutz' 1991 death in Elyria, west of Cleveland.

Wilson has asked Gov. Ted Strickland for mercy, although the Ohio Parole Board has recommended that Strickland not grant clemency.

The Ohio Supreme Court on Friday rejected Wilson's latest request to delay his execution.

Events leading to Lutz's death began May 3, 1991, when she went with an old boyfriend and Wilson, whom she had recently met, to the Empire Tavern in Elyria.

Strickland spares inmate's life

Gov. Ted Strickland honored the wishes of family members of the slain Cincinnati woman by concurring with the Ohio Parole Board and sparing the life of her son, condemned killer Jeffrey D. Hill of Hamilton County.

Hill, 44, was to be executed March 3 at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility near Lucasville for murdering his 62-year-old mother.

Hill stabbed her to death on March 23, 1991, while he was in a crack cocaine-induced rage. He said he does not remember what happened that night.

Hill was "very happy" when he was told that the governor had granted clemency, prisons spokeswoman Andrea Carson said.

Strickland reduced Hill's sentence to 25 years to life, meaning that he could be released in about seven years because he has been incarcerated for 18 years.

Parole Board favors clemency for man who stabbed his mom to death

A Hamilton County man who stabbed his 62-year-old mother to death while he was on a crack-cocaine binge should not be executed and should be released in as little as seven years, the Ohio Parole Board recommended to Gov. Ted Strickland.

Jeffrey Hill, 44, is scheduled to be lethally injected March 3 at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility near Lucasville unless Strickland or a court intervenes.

Parole board members were clearly was impressed what a report released today called the "compelling and unanimous opinion" of the family of victim Emma Hill that her son and killer should not be executed.

"They have suffered tremendous loss, and execution would add further to their suffering," the board said.
