Space, Sutton fill Ohio's gap on U.S. House Energy, Commerce Committee

U.S. Reps. Zack Space (D-Dover) and Betty Sutton (D-Copley) have won seats on the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee and are the first Ohioans to sit on the committee in two years.

The last Ohio U.S. representatives to serve on the committee were Ted Strickland and Sherrod Brown who left in 2007.

Space said he'll be able to help his district and the state in the new position.

Space responds to unemployment numbers, anticipates ‘tough times’ over holidays for Ohioans

U.S. Rep. Zack Space (D-Dover) anticipated tough times for Ohio families during the upcoming holiday season in a column the Congressman issued to the press responding to the latest unemployment numbers.

Ohio’s jobless rate was at 7.3 percent in October. Ohio’s November numbers will not be released until later this month.

The U.S. lost 533,000 jobs in November, bringing the U.S. jobless rate to 6.7 percent, up from 6.5 percent in October. The increase represents the highest jobless rate in 15 years.

NRCC hitting Driehaus, Boccieri and Space for support from Rangel

Continuing a criticism lobbed during the campaign season, the National Republican Congressional Committee is criticizing U.S. Rep. Zack Space (D-Dover), as well as Congressmen-elects Steve Driehaus (D-Price Hill) and John Boccieri (D-Alliance), for their campaign connections to embattled U.S. Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.). 

The NRCC issued the criticism of the two, who have yet to take office, after the Washington Post penned an editorial saying that Rangel should step down from his chairmanship of the House Ways and Means Committee.

Space attacks cash-strapped Dailey on TV

U.S. Rep. Zack Space (D-Dover) has more than 11 times as much cash on hand than Fred Dailey (R-Mt. Vernon) and the 18th Congressional District race isn't listed as competitive by many national observers.

But that didn't prevent Space from launching an attack ad against Dailey -- who isn't even on television himself. 

The 30-second ad was seen by PolitickerOH.com during the 8:00 hour on a Columbus station. It attacks Dailey for supporting NAFTA and American jobs.

Space holds $930K in cash for election

Space raised $323,000 during the 3rd fundraising quarter that ended today, bring his total fundraising to nearly $2 million in 2008. 

Opponent Fred Dailey's (R-Mt. Vernon) has $81,000 in cash on hand after raising $74,000 during the period.

Space, Latta and Wilson talk about votes on bailout

U.S. Reps. Charlie Wilson (D-St. Clairsville), Zack Space (D-Dover) and Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) spoke about their votes on the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act Friday afternoon.

Wilson and Space each voted for the revised version of the bill that was approved by the Senate, while Latta voted against it, each of their votes remained unchanged from the first vote by the Senate revisions.

Obama blasted in SE Ohio with ad featuring Wright, Ayres, Rezko

A new ad by conservative Judicial Confirmation Network is targeting southeast Ohio and other select designated media areas in the state today.

Politico reports that the ad will play Zanesville and the Wheeling-Steubenville, West Virginia media markets. These markets blanket much of southeast Ohio, and the 18th Congressional District.

The ad is also playing in the Lima, Toledo and Youngstown markets.

Space, Dailey react to bailout bill

U.S. Rep. Zack Space (D-Dover) was one of seven Ohio representatives to vote in favor of the bailout bill yesterday. Space said in a statement that he was disappointed the bill didn’t pass.

“We are at a crossroads in America, and I am truly dispirited that, today, Congress could not political differences aside and rise to the occasion of averting what may well be an economic disaster,” Space said, adding that the bill’s failure may result in bank failures, bankruptcies and job loss.

However, the bill was not perfect.

UPDATED: Space talks immigration after voting for bailout

U.S. Rep. Zack Space's (D-Dover) Congressional office sent a press release yesterday about illegal immigration, hours after Space voted in favor of the financial bailout bill.

Space was one of 7 U.S. representatives from Ohio to vote in favor of the bill, which failed 228 to 205.

Space did not send a press release about the bailout, though some of his colleagues have spoken out.

Space campaign: Dailey’s illiterate

The campaign of U.S. Rep. Zack Space (D-Dover) said opponent Fred Dailey (R-Mt. Vernon) can’t perform the basic function of a representative: understanding legislation.

This was Space’s respond to Dailey’s press release sent Wednesday that accused Space of voting for a “scam” energy bill, which does “nothing to promote the development of advanced clean coal and coal-to-liquid technologies.”
