The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee released a new ad Friday targeting U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton), claiming that he has not worked in Washington D.C to help Oregon families, but instead has worked for higher profits and tax breaks for oil companies which have given money to his campaign.
“With hundreds of thousands of dollars of Big Oil money lining Gordon Smith’s campaign coffers, it’s no wonder he thinks they deserve billions in special tax breaks,” DSCC spokesman Matthew Miller said.
The ad also comes with the release of a new website funded by the DSCC. The site, boughtbybigoil.com, has Smith and six other Republican senators running for re-election. The page for Smith shows that the incumbent senator has taken $293,325 from big oil during his career. Two charts provided by the DSCC show gas prices and oil company profits skyrocketing during the past six years.
But, John Randall, spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee points out, Smith is not the only person accepting money from big oil.
“They are attacking Smith for taking $300,000 from big oil, but according to opensecrets.org the DSCC has taken over $458,000 from big oil this cycle,” Randall said.
Randall said that the people at the DSCC aren’t the only Democrats taking money from big oil. According to Randall, Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has taken $417,000 from big oil.
