RNC announces speakers at Convention; Oregon shut out

No Oregonian is slated to speak at the Republican National Convention next month, where U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) will be officially nominated as the party’s candidate for president, according to a list of speakers released Wednesday.

President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) will kick off the convention’s first night, a Monday, and they will be followed throughout the week with other high-ranking Republicans, including former presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee. McCain will be the main speaker on Thursday night when he will receive the nomination.

U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton) and Rep. Greg Walden (R-Hood River), Oregon's two federally elected officials, will not be attending the convention in order to focus on their campaigns.

The Republican National Convention will be held in St. Paul, Minn., Sept. 1-4. Watch PolitickerOR.com for continuous coverage from both the Democratic and the Republican convention.
