Merkley tries to carry momentum from Democratic Convention to campaign trail

ST. PAUL – Jeff Merkley did not waste much time between returning to Oregon from the Democratic National Convention to getting back out on the campaign trail.

As Republicans gather in the Twin Cities for the Republican National Convention, Merkley hit the road again this weekend, stopping in five more towns on his 100 Town Tour for change before celebrating Labor Day in Eugene and Portland, according to spokesman Matt Canter.

Canter also said that Merkley will continue to appear at events all over the Beaver State this week, except for one important break he will take.

“Jeff will be campaigning in different parts of the state all week, except on Wednesday, when he'll take some time away from the campaign trail to take his kids to school on their first day back from summer,” Canter said.

Merkley is also getting involved in the Hurricane Gustav relief effort. He sent out an e-mail to his supporters Monday, asking them to contribute to the relief effort. Canter also said that Merkley and his wife will be donating to the Red Cross.

Incumbent Sen. Gordon Smith did not attend his party's convention this week. He is at home on the campaign trail as well.
