Furse reappears in latest Smith ad

Former U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Furse (D-Portland) appears in an ad released Friday by the U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith’s (R-Pendleton) campaign touting Smith’s record of working against Republican officials on issues ranging from gay rights to ending the Iraq war.

Furse is one of several Democrats to cross party lines to support Smith as he runs for re-election. This is the second ad she has appeared in for his 2008 campaign.

The first ad she appeared in became controversial after Furse said in the ad that Smith was "one of the first to stand up to George Bush and other Republicans to end this war.” She later explained that she had meant to say he was one of the first Republican Senators to suppose the war. She makes that distinction in this ad.

“He was one of the first Republicans to stand up to George Bush and his party to end this awful war,” Furse says in the ad.

U.S. Senate candidate Jeff Merkley’s (D-Portland) spokesman did not return immediate requests for comment, but his campaign was quick to put out a response questioning how Furse could claim Smith voted against his own party if he voted with President Bush 90 percent of the time.

But Furse stands by her original message and praises Smith’s record of bucking his party on several environmental, social, and foreign policy issues.

“I’ve seen Gordon Smith stand by his principles many times against his own party,” Furse says in the ad. “His integrity and honesty are good for Oregon.”
