DSCC ad revisits Smith Frozen Foods hiring practices

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee released a new television ad Friday revisiting accusations against a frozen food company owned by U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton) knowingly employed undocumented workers.

The ad cites a series of articles that appeared in Willamette Week last month that accused Smith Frozen Foods, located in Weston, of knowingly hiring undocumented workers. The ad also cites Smith’s vote to create harsher penalties for employers who knowingly hire illegal workers.

“This is just another case of Gordon Smith saying one thing and doing another,” DSCC spokesman Matthew Miller said. “Oregonians can’t trust Gordon Smith to get serious about solving immigration when the he is exploiting the broken system for his own benefit.”

Smith spokeswoman Lindsay Gilbride was quick to call the series of articles published by Willamette Week-a Pulitzer-prize winning alternative weekly newspaper- shoddy journalism.

“Jeff Merkley has stooped to a new low – running an ad based solely on absurd allegations from a liberal tabloid,” Gilbride said. “Jeff Merkley is continuing to ignore the truth and instead is hiding behind tabloid journalism to advance his campaign. It’s further proof he does not belong in the United States Senate.”
