OR-5: Latest Schrader ad says country needs to change direction

Congressional candidate Kurt Schrader (D-Canby) released his third campaign ad Tuesday touting his economic plan along with his blue-collar history and work ethic.

“This is a district where it’s blue collar folks that work hard,” Schrader says in the ad. “Many of them live and work on the land, just like I do with my family.”

Jeff Harvey, campaign manager for Mike Erickson (R-Lake Oswego) was quick to question Schrader's blue collar connection. He pointed out that Schrader inherited five million dollars three years ago from his grandfather. Harvey also accused Schrader of having investments in oil companies.

"He only talks the talk, but he doesn't walk the walk," Harvey said. "He's definitely out of touch with Oregon families.

Schrader's campaign spokeswoman, Maria Westfried, did not deny the investments. She also pointed out that it was not a crime to inheret money. She also added that in the ad, Schrader never actually says he is blue collar, he just lives and works on the land not surprised by Harvey's attack.

"Erickson's entire strategy has been to attack Kurt," Westfried said. "Why else would he hide from debates and not talk about issues on his own?

The latest poll in the race shows Schrader with a healthy lead over the Lake Oswego businessman, 51-38 percent, despite the fact that Erickson has released several ads attacking Schrader. Erickson has focused his attention on blasting the Canby veterinarian after his campaign has weathered several controversies varying from Erickson paying for a girlfriends' abortion in 2001 to misrepresenting a 2004 trip to Cuba as a "humanitarian mission," when organizers thought of it as more of a vacation.

"There's a reason that he's never won an election," Westfried said about Erickson.
