Merkley camp calls on Smith to return donations from convicted Alaska senator

After U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) was found guilty on federal corruption charges Monday, U.S. Senate candidate Jeff Merkley’s (D-Portland) campaign sent out a statement requesting that U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton) rid himself of any campaign funds he had ever received from Stevens.

"Gordon Smith has benefited personally and politically from Ted Stevens and his fountain of cash," said Merkley campaign spokesman Matt Canter.  "Smith should have done the right thing and returned the money when Stevens was first indicted, but he should certainly do the right thing now."

Smith already turned $10,000 over to charity after Stevens was first indicted in July. He then turned another $10,000 over to charity in September after he went through donations to a previous campaign. As for the remaining $19,000 Smith spokesman Brooks Kochvar has said that money was spent in a prior campaign.

Stevens was found guilty on charges stemming from allegations that he concealing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of gifts and home renovations from VECO Corp., an Alaskan oil company.

Calls to Smith's campaign were not immediately returned.
