Oregon has slowly moved from the swing state column to the Democratic column over the last eight years, USA Today reported Tuesday.
“While Oregon hasn't voted for a Republican president since choosing Ronald Reagan in 1984, it was considered a swing state in the past two elections,” reporter Tracy Lowe wrote. “In 2000, Democratic nominee Al Gore won Oregon by less than half a percentage point. Gore got 46.96% of the vote, while George W. Bush got 46.52%. In 2004, Democrat John Kerry defeated Bush 51% to 47%.”
But, the paper said, increasing Democratic registration over the past eight years has moved the Beaver State toward the blue column. As a result, Oregon saw neither presidential candidate visit, nor any presidential campaign commercials on network television throughout the general election.
The paper focused on Oregon as part of its “50 States/50 Days” series that profiles the presidential race in every state.
