Senate race won’t be decided till morning

PORTLAND --  Oregon’s Senate race is too close to call and will not be decided before Wednesday morning.

Currently, U.S. Senate candidate Jeff Merkley (D-Portland) and U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton) each have 47 percent of the vote. Constitution Party candidate Dave Brownlow has six percent of the vote. Elections officials will stop counting ballots at midnight and resume at 7 a.m.

"What is apparent to us now is there will not be an ability to determine a winner tonight," Smith told his supporters at the Benson Hotel, as reported by Jeff Mapes at The Oregonian.

“Things are feeling pretty good, pretty good,” Merkley told his supporters at the Convention Center. “But I think it is going to take until tomorrow morning until we know for sure where this stands.”

According to The Oregonian, 50 percent of votes have been counted in the race
