Former Merkley spokesman takes on Georgia Senate runoff

If you thought everyone in Oregon had enough of the intense, bitter Senate campaign now that the race between U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton) and U.S. Senator-elect Jeff Merkley (D-Portland) was finished, think again.

Former Merkley spokesman Matt Canter began his new job in Georgia earlier this week as spokesman for U.S. Senate candidate Jim Martin’s campaign as Martin (D-Georgia) competes in a runoff against U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Georgia).

The Georgia race is a familiar scenario for Canter: an underdog Democratic candidate seeks to knock off a Republican incumbent, and the challenger is hoping that a wave of Democratic enthusiasm will push him over the top.

After many pundits wrote off the Georgia race as an easy Chambliss win, Martin closed the gap in the waning days of the campaign. Chambliss earned 49.8 percent of the vote on Election Day, while Martin grabbed 46.8 percent. Under Georgia law, if no candidate breaks the 50 percent mark, the top two candidates compete in a runoff election.

The runoff election is scheduled for December 2.
