Portland-area Democrats and rural Republicans grabbed the largest vote totals in state house races, according to numbers released by the Secretary of State on Friday.
The following is a list of the top 10 Oregon State House Representative-elects that received the most votes (major-party candidates with major-party opposition only):

3. Rep. Gene Whisnant (R-Sunriver) 22,058
4. Rep. Carolyn Tomei (D-Portland) 21,302
5. Representative-elect Judy Stiegler (D-Bend) 19,779
6. Rep. Dennis Richardson (R-Central Point) 19,641
7. Rep. Tobias Read (D-Portland) 19,420
8. Representative-elect Chris Garrett (D-Oregon City) 19,325
9. Rep. Andy Olson (R-Albany) 18,808
10. Rep. Deborah Boone (D-Cannon Beach) 18,602
The list shows that Democrats won 7 of 10 races. According to Oregon’s latest census numbers, the average population in an Oregon State House district is 62,458. And according to the secretary of state’s voter registration numbers, there is an average of 35,899 registered voters per house district. With the secretary of state reporting that 85.7 percent of registered voters participating in the 2008 election, each house district saw an average of 30,754 registered voters cast a ballot.
