UPDATED: State Senate committee heads announced

The Oregon State Senate announced its committee chairs and members for the 2009 legislative session Tuesday, and many potential gubernatorial candidates will have some influential assignments.

State Sen. Mark Hass, who has been rumored to be considering a run for governor in 2010, will head up the Education and General Government Committee. He’ll also be on the Environmental and Natural Resources Committee, as well as the Finance and Revenue Committee.

Senate President Peter Courtney has also been rumored to be interested in the job. He’ll be Co-chair of the Capital Construction and Information Technology Cubcommittee. He’s also listed as serving a temporary position on Business & Transportation, as well as on the General Government Subcommittee. He will be replaced when the Clackamas County Commissioners name a replacement for outgoing State Sen. Kurt Schrader, who was elected to Congress in November.

Republicans will be a minority in the body this session, but keep an eye on State Sen. Jason Atkinson (R-Central Point) and State Sen. Bruce Starr (R-Hillsboro). Both names have been floated by Republican Party officials as potential gubernatorial candidates . Atkinson will be Vice Chair of the Environmental and Natural Resources Committee, and will sit on the Rules Committee. Starr will be Vice Chair of the Business and Transportation Committee, as well as on the Transportation and Economic Development Subcommittee.
