With a new campaign manager, Avakian moves SecState race forward

After months of coping with what appeared to be the symptoms of a stalled campaign, State Sen. Brad Avakian's bid for Secretary of State finally seems to be taking shape.

Avakian has just hired a new campaign manager named Michael Clarke, a young campaign guru who only arrived in Oregon a couple of weeks ago, but who has experience working on legislative and congressional races in his home-state of Ohio, and most recently, in New Jersey.

Wingard says he'll stay in race despite domestic violence allegation

It looks like the solid Republican Dist. 26 House seat, which is currently held by retiring State Rep. Jerry Krummel, could potentially shift party control after an unpleasant revelation.

The Willamette Week is reporting that Matt Wingard, a young TV reporter and GOP up-and-comer who’s seeking the seat, has admitted to pleading guilty to hitting his son back in 2001, who was seven years old at the time.

Walton will chair Metsger campaign

In an interesting move, State Sen. Rick Metsger announced Wednesday that former NBA star Bill Walton has signed on to chair his Secretary of State campaign. Walton is a sports broadcaster, and former Trailblazer, and also travels around the country as a motivational speaker.

Metsger’s hope is to encourage broader participation in politics, and said in a statement that Walton is a figure who can generate interest among people who typically are not politically active.

Democratic State Sen. Betsy Johnson is generating tremendous buzz today after the revelation of an FBI probe into what many believe relates to her connection with the Scappoose airport. Johnson has acknowledged she violated ethics rules in relation to the airport, but insists they were unintentional.

Novick wants repeal of law

Democratic Senate candidate Steve Novick called for the repeal of No Child Left Behind Tuesday, marking the six year anniversary of the controversial bill that sought to raise school performance by injecting sharper accountability.

At a press conference in Salem, Novick slammed the legislation, faulting what he characterized as a spineless Congress, and compared NCLB to the flawed implementation of the Iraq war policy.

Kulongoski on Clinton and Iowa
