Expect next U.S. attorney appointments to be more ‘professional’

President-elect Barack Obama appears to be on track to re-professionalize the justice department, Oregon State University professor Bill Lunch said Wednesday.

“All signals from Obama are that he values very professional qualifications,” Lunch said in an interview with PolitickerOR.com. “He was a law professor at the University of Chicago and the editor of the Harvard Law Review. I’m sure he knows extremely capable people all over the country.”

Merkley releases new ad focusing on abortion

U.S. Senate candidate Jeff Merkley (D-Portland) released a new campaign ad Monday laying out his position on abortion and accusing U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton) of siding with President Bush on working to take away a woman’s choice.

"There are stark differences between Gordon Smith and Jeff Merkley on reproductive rights. In the U.S. Senate, Gordon Smith has done everything he can to outlaw a woman's right to choose," said Julie Edwards, Merkley campaign spokeswoman. "Smith has stood with Bush and Republicans to overturn Roe v.

Today's convention schedule

The third day of the Democratic National Convention will be called to order at 5:00 PM EST on Wednesday, with a theme of "Securing America's Future."

The day will begin with the nominating process for President, including nominating speeches for U.S. Sens. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Barack Obama (D-Ill.), followed by a roll call vote.

The headline speaker will be vice presidential nominee, U.S. Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.).
