Dean, Merkley, Wyden fire up Dem volunteers

PORTLAND --  Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean stumped with U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Portland) and U.S. Senate candidate Jeff Merkley (D-Portland) at Barack Obama’s Oregon headquarters Sunday night, urging volunteers to work as hard as possible in the next 48 hours to turn out as many voters as possible.

Dean to rally Oregon Dems

Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean is headed to Oregon Sunday to participate in get-out-the-vote events with state Democratic candidates.

Dean will be in Portland Sunday afternoon, and Eugene Sunday evening, to participate in rallies and urge Oregonians to get their ballots in, according to a release from Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama’s Oregon office.

OR-5: Oregon Farm Bureau endorses Schrader

The Oregon Farm Bureau endorsed State Sen. Kurt Schrader (D-Canby) in the 5th Congressional District race Tuesday.

Schrader and Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian were the only two Democrats the OFB endorsed in the statewide races. They are accompanied by U.S. Rep. Greg Walden (R-Hood River), U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton) and presidential candidate John McCain (R-Ariz.).

Oregon Obama camp keeps working

Republican presidential candidate John McCain may be suspending his campaign operations later in the day, but Barack Obama’s Oregon campaign will be continuing with all of its scheduled events Thursday.

Obama’s Oregon spokeswoman Sahar Wali said that the campaign will be continuing with all phone banking and canvassing activities, as well as an economic forum featuring Oregon Treasurer Randall Edwards and Labor Commissioner Brad Avakain, scheduled to take place later this afternoon at Obama’s headquarters in southeast Portland.

Slate of Avakian replacements chosen

When Brad Avakian decided to replace Labor Commissioner Dan Garner, it was already past the filing deadline. The Democrats therefore have to choose a slate of three to five nominees to replace the state senator and send it on to the county commissioners in the affected district.

Legislators Report Campaign Contributions

Three Democratic candidates for state office reported receiving a total of $28,000 in contributions last week, according to the Oregonian.

Despite House rules that prohibit legislators from accepting or soliciting contribution during this month’s session, Rep. Greg Macpherson, who is running for attorney general, reported to the state Elections Division that his campaign received contributions totaling $5,600 last week.
