DPO reorganizes grassroots network to holiday canned food drive

The Democratic Party of Oregon is re-mobilizing its general election grassroots campaign network into a holiday food drive, according to a release from the party on Thursday.

“The Democratic Party’s 2008 success wasn’t a movement just to win an election,” DPO Chair Meredith Wood Smith said. “It’s a call to restore our country. That restoration starts by helping our communities in need.”

DPO: ‘We hope the next DNC leader will continue Gov. Dean’s model’

The Democratic Party of Oregon was saddened by the news that Democratic National Committee Chair Howard Dean will step down from his post in the beginning of 2009, as reported by Politico.com.

According to the report, Dean plans to honor his commitment of serving a single term as party chair. During his tenure, Dean saw the Democratic Party earn two of its biggest wins in the 2006 and 2008 elections.

Smith camp: Smith did not visit every county every year

“Sen. Smith was incorrect about his statement of being in every county every year,” Gilbride said in an email.

Smith Frozen Foods trains employees in three different languages

A food processing plant owned by U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton) is training employees in English, Spanish and Japanese, according to a spokeswoman for Smith’s re-election campaign.

This was in response to a Democratic Party of Oregon inquiry as to whether the Smith Frozen Foods plant located in Weston had changed its training practices after a 1997 accident at the plant injured two workers.

State parties react to Biden announcement

The Oregon Democratic Party and the Republican Party of Oregon had different reactions to Saturday’s announcement that U.S. Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) will be Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s (D-Ill.) running mate.
