Furse reappears in latest Smith ad

Former U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Furse (D-Portland) appears in an ad released Friday by the U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith’s (R-Pendleton) campaign touting Smith’s record of working against Republican officials on issues ranging from gay rights to ending the Iraq war.

Furse is one of several Democrats to cross party lines to support Smith as he runs for re-election. This is the second ad she has appeared in for his 2008 campaign.

Democrats pounce on Smith's ad for Iraq claims

When Gordon Smith released his new campaign video on Tuesday that featured praising statements on the incumbent senator from Presidential candidate Barack Obama, Smith's re-election rivals cried foul.

Wednesday, more Democrats started accusing Smith of trying to rewrite history.

It started with former U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Furse (D-Portland), who the Smith campaign featured in a previous ad regarding Smith's policy on the war in Iraq.

Ad: Furse and Gordly voting for Smith

A new ad for U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton) features two Oregon Democrats who say they will vote for the incumbent senator. According to the ad, former U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Furse and state Sen. Avel Gordly, both Democrats, are behind Smith and not Democratic challenger Jeff Merkley.

The duo explains in the video that they will be voting for Smith because of his open mindedness, independence and his stance on ending the war in Iraq.

Smith tries to beat Merkley to in race to the center

Gordon Smith has carefully crafted his brand: he is a self-described independent thinker who is searching for ‘common ground for the common good.’

His party affiliation—Republican—is difficult to find on his campaign website, much easier to locate is the tab at the top, “Democrats for Smith.”
