What Gordon Smith would have done for Oregon schools and jobs... (Hint: Nothing!)

Yesterday, the Oregon Legislature completed its work in closing the giant $855 million budget hole for the last few months of this biennium. How did they do it? From the O: To fill the $855 million hole, lawmakers agreed to spend about $405 million of the federal stimulus money set aside for Oregon, cobbled together about $140 million from a variety of state agencies and cut about $310 million from agency budgets. Without that federal stimulus package, we would have been in an even deeper hole: "Without that federal stimulus money, colleagues, we'd be closing down our schools in May....

Will Gordon Smith run against Ron Wyden?

Over at NW Republican, Ted Piccolo is saying that state GOP chairman Bob Tiernan is telling people that Gordon Smith is thinking of staging a comeback by running against Ron Wyden in 2010. Tiernan brought up some issues that he thought were rather exciting. Governor candidate musings: Walden and/or Smith in 2010?

Oregon Republicans are hoping outgoing U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith see a 2010 run for Oregon’s governor on the horizon, according to a Monday article in the AP.

The AP’s Brad Cain wrote that state GOP officials are hoping that Smith and/or U.S. Rep. Greg Walden (R-Hood River) are interested in running. However, neither lawmakers have committed to the race, and Walden told Cain he is happy serving in congress.
