Daschle out. Dean or Kitzhaber in?

Well, former Senator Tom Daschle has withdrawn his nomination for Secretary of Health & Human Services. He's also declining an appointment to be the health reform czar for the White House. It's unfortunate, but having run TV ads like this one, well, a quarter-million dollars or so in limo-and-driver expenses just smells funny. Anyway, since the political wheel never stops turning, I'd like to suggest that President Obama seriously consider appointing one of the two recent doctors-turned-governors for the post: Howard Dean and John Kitzhaber. In their own ways, both have clearly shown an ability to generate grassroots support. Dean...

Democratic Party of Oregon elects new committee members

The Democratic Party of Oregon elected two new committee members on Sunday to serve as Oregon’s representatives to the Democratic National Committee.

Oregon Dems voted in Lupita Mauer, the former chair of the Washington County Democrats, as one of the newest members of Oregon’s national committee. Mauer lives in Aloha.

Mike Radway, the treasurer for the DPO, also won election to represent the state at the national level. Radway lives in Portland.

Daschle, not Kitzhaber, will be HHS Secretary

Former Gov. John Kitzhaber had been rumored to be a candidate for Secretary of Health and Human Services in President-elect Barack Obama’s cabinet, but on Wednesday Politico.com reported that that position went to former U.S. Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.).

Kitzhaber was first rumored for the post three weeks ago, along with Daschle and Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean.

DPO: ‘We hope the next DNC leader will continue Gov. Dean’s model’

The Democratic Party of Oregon was saddened by the news that Democratic National Committee Chair Howard Dean will step down from his post in the beginning of 2009, as reported by Politico.com.

According to the report, Dean plans to honor his commitment of serving a single term as party chair. During his tenure, Dean saw the Democratic Party earn two of its biggest wins in the 2006 and 2008 elections.

Dean to rally Oregon Dems

Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean is headed to Oregon Sunday to participate in get-out-the-vote events with state Democratic candidates.

Dean will be in Portland Sunday afternoon, and Eugene Sunday evening, to participate in rallies and urge Oregonians to get their ballots in, according to a release from Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama’s Oregon office.

Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean will be appearing in Portland Friday for two events.

According to Barack Obama’s Oregon campaign spokeswoman Sahar Wali, Dean will be appearing at two rallies as part of his Register for Change tour. The first event will be at Lewis & Clark College at 1 p.m., where Dean will address students on the importance of registering to vote. The second event will be a volunteer appreciation event at Obama’s campaign headquarters in southeast Portland at 5 p.m.
