Senator Jeff Merkley Introduces the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA)

Back in the primaries for the US Senate race, I was an early supporter of Steve Novick, but after Jeff Merkley won the primary, I swallowed my pride, wrote the check, and trundled down to the Merkley office to volunteer as much as I could. Today, Jeff Merkley more than earned the support that I gave him. He was one of four Senators, including Susan Collins, Olympia Snow and Ted Kennedy, who introduced the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) into the United States Senate. He is continuing his commitment to workplace protections, as he pushed successfully for a state version of...

Taking on the Mortgage Crisis

By Senator Jeff Merkley. Editor's Note: The Senator will be joining us live at 3 p.m. to answer your questions here at BlueOregon. America's economy is caught in a vicious vortex. This vortex is created by three interlocking factors; a jobs crisis, a lending crisis, and a mortgage crisis. If we don't address all three crises, the vortex will continue and pull America from a severe recession into a depression, with enormous damage to the financial standing of American families. Since taking office, I've been concerned that not enough attention has been paid to the third component – the mortgage...

Let's Draft Pete DeFazio for Governor

By Ben DuPree of Portland, Oregon. Previously, Ben worked for Jeff Merkley's U.S. Senate campaign, worked for then-Commissioner Sam Adams, consulted with the SEIU, and serves on Metro's Committee for Citizen Involvement. Ben previously blogged at Witigonen and now blogs at Preemptive Karma. Oregon needs Pete DeFazio to run for Governor. To help this along, I have started a blog devoted to the effort: Draft Pete DeFazio. From a purely political perspective, he is the strongest realistic candidate we Democrats can field. By far. Without reading any specific polling, it is fair to say that he has strong name recognition...

Tom Daschle, whipping boy.

By Russ Kelley of Portland, Oregon. Russ is a first year student at Willamette University College of Law. Before law school, Russ spent several years as a press aide to the Democratic leaders of the U.S. House and Senate, including Senator Tom Daschle. Most recently he served as spokesman for then-Speaker and U.S. Senate candidate Jeff Merkley. He speaks only for himself. Let's get one thing straight: Tom Daschle is not a tax cheat. Willie Nelson is a tax cheat. Pete Rose is a tax cheat. Al Capone was a tax cheat. Tom Daschle is not. What he is, is...

Transparency for Wyden and Merkley

After eight years of secrecy and back-room deals, this kind of transparancy is a delight to behold: Oregon Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley announced they will post requests they receive for federal spending earmarks to allow Oregonians a chance to comment on them. Now that the Republicans no longer control spending, we're hearing a lot about how evil earmarks are--but actually, they serve an important function in government. They allow states to get important projects funded, projects that often provide huge benefit for relatively modest cost to the Federal government. Being able to see what's in Oregon's hopper is a...

Merkley: "Bold action is needed" on stimulus package

Today, Senator Jeff Merkley called on his colleagues to support the proposed stimulus plan. He was joined by Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ). From the Oregonian: "I tell you, Oregon certainly understands this problem. In the last three months, every single month we've had a one percent increase in unemployment. It's gone from 6 percent to 9 percent in just 90 days,'' he said. "People are wondering, where's the bottom?'' The bill under consideration in the Senate, he said, is the answer and it strikes the right balance. And if it fails, he said schools in...
