Oregon Dems react to McCain’s VP choice

DENVER--The Oregon Democratic Party said Friday that the addition of Gov. Sarah Palin (R-Ak.) to the Republican presidential ticket would only push more voters toward Democratic candidate Barack Obama (D-Ill.).

“Now we know the field, and there is one ticket that stands for change, and one ticket that is four more years of the Bush administration,” DPO spokesman Marc Siegel said.

Today's convention schedule

The third day of the Democratic National Convention will be called to order at 5:00 PM EST on Wednesday, with a theme of "Securing America's Future."

The day will begin with the nominating process for President, including nominating speeches for U.S. Sens. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Barack Obama (D-Ill.), followed by a roll call vote.

The headline speaker will be vice presidential nominee, U.S. Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.).

Former Rep. Smith says Obama not ready to lead

DENVER -- Former U.S. Rep. Denny Smith (R-Ontario) said Tuesday that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama I(D-Ill.) may have wowed a lot of people on the campaign trail, but that did not mean he was ready to lead.

“He’s been wrong on taxes, wrong on the surge. And he won’t even admit he was wrong on the surge,” Smith said via conference call from Oregon. “We ought to make him campaigner of the year. But not president.”

Bergstein weighs in on VP pick

DENVER -- Political strategist Len Bergstein weighed in on how Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's selection of U.S. Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) will play in Oregon on Tuesday.

"He's a great stump speaker, so I think he will have the kind of intense personal politics we are used to in Oregon," Bergstein said. "He's a great Democratic policy guy, and he's a really accessible politician."

Bergstein also said that Biden's stance toward Supreme Court judges will play well in Oregon.

OR-1: Wu suspected Biden as VP choice all along

U.S. Rep. David Wu (D-Portland) didn't know who presidential candidate Barack Obama (D-Ill.), would pick as his running mate, but on Monday Wu said all along he had a feeling it would be U.S. Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.).

“I had been talking about it in the congressional lunchroom, and I had said Biden,” Wu said, as he left a breakfast meeting with Oregon Delegates on his way to address the Asian Pacific Islander American Caucus. “But I also said no one knew for sure because this Obama campaign is so disciplined.”

Day says Democrats' convention shows weaknesses, divisions

Oregon Republican Party chairman Vance Day said on Monday that Democrats were obviously not united around Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama (D-Ill.) because Obama’s pick of U.S. Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) was a sign that Democrats were afraid he was unprepared to be president.

“By adding Joe Biden to the ticket, they are trying to fortify him in areas he is weak,” Day said. “I happen to like Joe Biden, but even Joe Biden says Obama is not ready to lead.”

OR-1: Blumenauer: ‘Bush cronies are running McCain campaign’

DENVER-U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Portland) urged the Oregon delegation to get out and fight for every vote for Barack Obama, warning them that the smear tactics of John McCain’s campaign were only going to intensify.

“Make no mistake; the Bush cronies are running McCain’s campaign down to the minute detail,” Blumenauer told the delegates gathered for breakfast. “If they have their way, they will not only maintain their draconian policies, they will expand it.”

Westlund looks forward to Biden’s help downticket
