House Republicans: ‘It’s going to be difficult to have a bipartisan atmosphere’

A spokesman for the Oregon House Republicans said that several bitter State House campaigns would make it difficult to work together in a non-partisan fashion when the legislature reconvenes in 2009.

“It’s going to be very difficult to have a bipartisan atmosphere next session,” House Republican spokesman Nick Smith said. “It’s going to be very difficult because of the way FuturePAC ran their campaigns.”

State House: GOP needs to save incumbents to stave off Dem supermajority

With the exception of the U.S Senate race, the talk in Oregon this election cycle has centered on just how big the Democrats will win.

The story is the same on the State House level. The Dem’s currently have a 31-29 advantage in the House, but on Tuesday they are hoping to pick up five seats, and the much coveted State House “super-majority” status.

HD-50: Twenty-four hour campaign cycle

State House candidates Rep. John Lim (R-Gresham) and Greg Matthews (D-Portland) have been keeping some unusual campaign hours during this election cycle.

Matthews (D-Portland) works all night for the Gresham Fire Department before taking advantage of the daylight hours to campaign.

Meanwhile, Lim is up at dawn to greet Gresham residents at the MAX line and talk about the community’s issues before they head off to work during the day.

HD-50: Matthews demands Lim take down latest ad

State House candidate Greg Matthews (D-Portland) is demanding that state Rep. John Lim (R-Gresham) pull a television ad that accuses Matthews of violating a city rule by using photos of him in his firefighter uniform in campaign literature.

Interim Gresham city attorney David Ris sent a letter to House Minority leader Bruce Hanna (R-Roseburg) on September 30 informing him that since the pictures that appear in the literature were taken before August 5, 2008, Matthews is not in violation of the law.

Oregonian endorses Lim, Nelsen, VanOrman

The Oregonian editorial board endorsed two Republicans and one Democrat in three of the states most competitive house races Sunday.

In all three races, the Oregonian urged readers to elect who they say as the more experienced candidate. That led to the paper giving the nod to Rep. John Lim (R-Gresham) in HD-50, to elect John Nelsen (R-Wood Village) in HD-49, and to elect Suzanne VanOrman (D-Hood River) in HD-52.

HD-50: Matthews comes out with new ad

State House candidate Greg Matthews (D-Portland) released a new ad Monday touting his various public safety careers and promising to continue to serve the residents of East Multnomah County if elected.

“They say that being a good representative is all about responding to people,” Matthews says in the ad. “Well, that’s one thing I sure know how to do, whether it’s a fire call, or a police 911 call, or my country’s call.”
