Matt Davis at Blogtown: As if being thrown in jail and facing potential court sanctions weren't enough, alleged initiative racketeer Bill Sizemore could now face hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines imposed by the Oregon Secretary of State's office. Secretary of State Kate Brown's office announced this morning that it has opened an investigation into Sizemore's behavior during the 2008 election. A civil penalty of $10,000 per crooked transaction may be leveled as a result, which means there's a potential for a huge fine to be leveled against Sizemore. Hunt is next Speaker of the House

House Majority Leader Dave Hunt (D-Clackamas) was elected to be the next Speaker of the House on Saturday when House Democrats met to decide their leadership for the 2009 session.

Hunt will replace current House Speaker Jeff Merkley (D-Portland), who won election to the U.S. Senate on Thursday after defeating U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton).

Dean to rally Oregon Dems

Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean is headed to Oregon Sunday to participate in get-out-the-vote events with state Democratic candidates.

Dean will be in Portland Sunday afternoon, and Eugene Sunday evening, to participate in rallies and urge Oregonians to get their ballots in, according to a release from Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama’s Oregon office.

Poll shows Brown up by 6

Secretary of State candidate Kate Brown (D-Portland) has a six point lead in the race, according to a poll released Wednesday.

The poll, released by Portland Tribune/Fox 12, shows that Brown has 38 percent of voters backing her, while her campaign rival, Rick Dancer (R-Springfield), has 32 percent of the vote. Pacific Green Party candidate Seth Wooley has four percent of voters supporting him, while 25 percent of voters remain undecided in the race.

Oregonian endorses Brown for secretary of state

The Oregonian endorsed secretary of state candidate Kate Brown (D-Portland) Tuesday, saying the state senator had the right experience to take on the job.

The secretary of state position is not only second in command to the governor, but is also in charge of the state elections. The paper wrote that Brown’s 17 years of service in the legislature, and her work on the Oregon Senate elections committee, made her well equipped to handle both positions.

Brown gets Independent Party endorsement

Secretary of state candidate Kate Brown (D-Portland) picked up an endorsement from the Oregon Independent Party Tuesday.

The party’s, which is Oregon’s third largest political party with 33,000 registered members, said that Brown’s record of reform in the state Senate, where she passed legislation to create the ORESTAR system that allows for voters to track campaign finance, was what the secretary of state's office would need.
