It's good to see the majority leaders in the House and Senate, Rep. Mary Nolan and Sen. Richard Devlin, take the Republicans to task for their utter failure to do, well, anything constructive. Oregon State House: The 10 biggest winners

Portland-area Democrats and rural Republicans grabbed the largest vote totals in state house races, according to numbers released by the Secretary of State on Friday.

The following is a list of the top 10 Oregon State House Representative-elects that received the most votes (major-party candidates with major-party opposition only):

1.      Rep. Mary Nolan (D-Portland) 25,939
2.      Rep. Mitch Greenlick (D-Portland) 25,277
3.      Rep. Gene Whisnant (R-Sunriver) 22,058

House Democratic leadership blames Bush, looks to tackle state budget crisis

State House Democratic leaders blamed Oregon’s worsening economy on a bleaker national picture Wednesday and began prioritizing the state’s diminishing state budget to get through the economic crisis.

“This nation has been battered by the failed economic policies of the Bush Administration and Oregon is now feeling that pain,” newly elected House Majority Leader Mary Nolan (D-Portland) said. “The cuts requested by the Governor will affect every Oregonian and every Oregon business.

Hunt is next Speaker of the House

House Majority Leader Dave Hunt (D-Clackamas) was elected to be the next Speaker of the House on Saturday when House Democrats met to decide their leadership for the 2009 session.

Hunt will replace current House Speaker Jeff Merkley (D-Portland), who won election to the U.S. Senate on Thursday after defeating U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton).

Oregonian endorses two more Dems for State House

The Oregonian endorsed Rep. Mary Nolan (D-Portland) and Rep. Tobias Read (D-Beaverton) in their re-election campaigns Thursday.

In the heavily Democratic HD-36, Nolan is running for her fourth term against Republican Steve Oppenheim. With the state facing an uncertain economic future, the paper’s editors wrote that Nolan had the wisdom and experience needed to serve Oregon in January.
