Senator Jeff Merkley Introduces the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA)

Back in the primaries for the US Senate race, I was an early supporter of Steve Novick, but after Jeff Merkley won the primary, I swallowed my pride, wrote the check, and trundled down to the Merkley office to volunteer as much as I could. Today, Jeff Merkley more than earned the support that I gave him. He was one of four Senators, including Susan Collins, Olympia Snow and Ted Kennedy, who introduced the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) into the United States Senate. He is continuing his commitment to workplace protections, as he pushed successfully for a state version of...

Campaign over, Merkley changes on gun issue

I'm a few days late in noticing this, but freshman Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., has pulled an interesting switch on a gun issue since his Democratic primary campaign last year. Steve Nehl/The Oregonian/2002Crater Lake is Oregon's only national park. On...

Feds Seek Greater Control Over Oregon Resources

Which I'm sure will cheer those who reside in their fear-based community that any development in Oregon will start the death-knell of "Oregon As We Know It".

Yet again, let me re-state: Oregon is the tenth largest state in the United States. And less than two percent of this giant landmass is considered developed land. Most of our counties are larger than the smaller states in the United States. Harney county is larger than the ten smallest states. Clatsop county is about the size of Rhode Island. And yet we continue to be dominated by the economic imperialism of Multnomah county. Their population of 660-thousand people dwarfs our population of 35-thousand.

WASHINGTON-My colleague Charles Pope and I sat down for breakfast with Sen. Jeff Merkley Wednesday morning to get at least a glimpse of how the Oregon Democrat is settling into life in the Senate. A glimpse is sort of what...

Merkley makes difference on D.C. voting bill

I doubt this is a big issue in Oregon, but Washington, D.C. is much closer to getting a voting representative in Congress - due in part to the decision of Oregon voters to oust Republican Sen. Gordon Smith in favor...

Where the deer and the watermelons play....

Shorter East Oregonian: Okay Merkley, we didn't vote for you but we're stuck with you. Your Eastern Oregon satellite office can't be in Pendleton because Gordon Smith might have to look at it when he comes into town for his latte. Wyden and Walden have dibs in LaGrande. So its off to Hermiston for you, son.

Merkley, Wyden quizzed on their own taxes

After three of President Barack Obama's nominees had problems paying their taxes, Politico decided to turn its attention to the folks who pass judgment on those nominees: the Senate. Politico asked all 99 senators (remember, we're currently missing one from...

Transparency for Wyden and Merkley

After eight years of secrecy and back-room deals, this kind of transparancy is a delight to behold: Oregon Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley announced they will post requests they receive for federal spending earmarks to allow Oregonians a chance to comment on them. Now that the Republicans no longer control spending, we're hearing a lot about how evil earmarks are--but actually, they serve an important function in government. They allow states to get important projects funded, projects that often provide huge benefit for relatively modest cost to the Federal government. Being able to see what's in Oregon's hopper is a...
