Breakthrough for Burnside Bridgehead

Finally, some actual construction action at the long vacant Burnside Bridgehead site on the east side of Portland's Burnside Bridge. We're getting very close to the groundbreaking, folks. Excitement is building. It's going to be grand -- a brand new... wait for it...

... fence!

They're going to hire local artists "to reflect and highlight the creativity and industry of the Central Eastside Urban Renewal Area by making this a dynamic corner." Literally covering up the fact that the city can't even give away this lot. It's all part of the "couplet" madness that will have a condo bunker standing in the middle of the intersection of Burnside and Sandy. It's nice that we have this kind of money lying around.

We Are The Mob You Were Looking For

By all means, call.

I called. Asking for "mo' mob". What I got was an auto-answer that asked me to press "1". Then I was re-directed to the DNC.

Bad move.

I want my party to be stand-up. I was pretty disappointed to find that the RNC was auto-forwarding calls in response to the above ad to the DNC. If the DNC wants to jam up phone lines for the RNC, okay. That's what stand-up guys do. They listen. They take their hits. They move on.

I called the RNC on their "other" phone line and explained that as a Republican, I was not happy with their decision to forward the calls.

Post Office deserting downtown Portland?

An alert reader sends along this list of Post Office branches that are under closure watch. In Portland (page 11), in addition to the Central Station at 5th and Pine, the Gus Solomon Courthouse branch is on the list (apparently, but misspelled). And of course, the Main Post Office is doomed to demolition for "urban renewal." Nobody seems to want to be downtown any more -- even the Postal Service. Brooklyn's also about to lose its branch. And so it goes in the internet world. Go by cell phone!

"Everyman Paulson might leave if he doesn't get his way"

I see that John Canzano, America's greatest sports columnist (at least in some people's minds), has joined the Merritt Paulson royal fan club. Canzano went out to the Paulson compound in Lake Oswego for a visit, and based on that encounter has pronounced LLP just a "regular guy." He walks around the house barefoot! He gives his infant child playful "raspberries"! "My dad drove a Ford Bronco; he was always out back, splitting wood in the yard. My mom drove a Volkswagen; always had dirt in her hands, and loved to plant things." The butler made us cut our own veal.

Can Twitter, Social Networking Lead to a Renaissance in Civic Engagement?

By Ted Wheeler of Portland, Oregon. Ted is the county chair for Multnomah County. He can be found on Twitter here. Now that I’ve extricated most of the battle-flak out of my backside over Multnomah County’s recent effort to hire a Social Networking Coordinator, I want to answer the basic question posed by the Portland Tribune: "Ted Wheeler, what were you thinking?" Simply put, I was thinking that government should get with it and embrace the future. Local governments, in particular, can capitalize on the amazing opportunity that web-based technologies, including social networking (SN), provide. These tools are quickly reshaping...

Port of Portland top brass are paid well

Continuing our series on executive salaries at government agencies and nonprofits in the Portland area, today we spotlight the Port of Portland. They've got quite a payroll over there, as indicated by the list they have furnished us of non-union employees whose base salaries are in excess of $100,000. There are 79 individuals in that category at the Port. Nine of them make more than $150,000 a year; 22 over $125,000. The average exec in the top 20 is paid $161,161. At the top of the Metro pyramid is the executive director, Bill Wyatt (right), at a base salary of $269,910.

I've hit one too many of those "most green" lists

Prolific blogger Jack Bogdanski, a master at tweaking Portland's city leaders, gleefully passes on a "15 greenest mayors" list that fails to include Mayor Sam Adams. The link on his post took me to an MSN city guides site that...

Walk around time

We made our second appearance in a row today at the Northwest Pilot Project's annual walk-a-thon in the Park Blocks at Portland State. People of all ages and from all walks of life walked, ran, or rode their motorized wheelchairs around the loop for an hour -- raising thousands of dollars for an important Portland charity.

Once again, we were blessed with exquisite weather, and friends of the NWPP provided all sorts of refreshments for everybody, and prizes for the best fundraisers. These guys supplied the soundtrack -- classic sounds that warmed us up and kept everybody on the beat for the whole event. Good vibrations all around.

Are they really that small minded?

Over at Bojack.org, there's a post saying that the Sam Adams recall effort is doomed because conservative talk show host Victoria Taft was "front and center" last night at the recall effort's kick-off party.

Bojack says that having conservatives involved will turn off all those groups that are needed to get rid of Adams - unions, Bus Project folks, greenies, etc.

Here is my question: I know that Jack Bogdanski himself is without question sufficiently small minded to actually not support a valid cause just because he politically disagrees with others who do support it. He has displayed his small mindedness time and again on his blog by banning commenters who do nothing more than make points he has trouble contesting.
