Obama camp opens up four more offices in Oregon

MINNEAPOLIS -- Presidential candidate Barack Obama's (D-Ill.) campaign announced Thursday it will be opening up four more regional offices in Oregon, bringing the total number of offices to 13 in the state.

Brand new regional offices in Florence and McMinnville will be getting off the ground. Offices in Gresham and Pendleton have been in operation for several weeks, but will be celebrating their official grand opening.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Former U.S. House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-Texas) told Oregon’s Republican delegation that when Republicans stick to who they are, what they stand for and what they believe in, they win their races every single time.

“When we’re like us, we win,” Armey told the Oregon delegation when he addressed them at their Thursday morning breakfast at the Republican National Convention. “When we’re not like us, we lose.”

Delegates crazy for Palin; Armey says VP pick could be Reagan in a skirt

MINNEAPOLIS -- Oregon’s delegation to the Republican National Convention was dazzled by vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s (R-Alaska) speech in St. Paul on Wednesday.

“I absolutely was thrilled,” Oregon Republican Party Chairman Vance Day said Thursday morning. “I got back to my hotel room last night at about 2:15 and I stayed up another hour just to watch the speech again.”

No sleep ... 'til after the convention

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- After a long night, the final day of the Republican National Convention will start early and end late for Oregon's delegates.

Roll call voting at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul went until well past 1 a.m. Thursday, as Oregon announced 30 delegates would be casting their votes for John McCain, and four would be voting for Ron Paul.

Smith's job approval hits all-time low

MINNEAPOLIS -- U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith’s job approval rating has hit an all-time low, a poll conducted by SurveyUSA shows.

The poll, released Wednesday, shows that Smith has a 56-percent job disapproval rating. The number of people disapproving of Smith’s work in Washington D.C. is the highest that poll has recorded since May 2005. The number of people disapproving of Smith also rose 9 percent since the company last polled Smith’s approval numbers on May 19.

Smith camp thrilled with decision to skip RNC

A spokeswoman for Gordon Smith’s campaign said Wednesday that the Republican U.S. senator and his campaign made a wise decision to focus their time campaigning in Oregon instead of mingling with their fellow Republicans at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul this week.

“It's far more valuable for Senator Smith to focus on the campaign this week rather than the parties in St. Paul,” Smith spokeswoman Lindsay Gilbride said.

Guam Governor commiserates with Palin

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- As he addressed the Oregon delegation, Guam Gov. Felix Camacho told a story of a man on his island that sounded eerily familiar.

He told them of a man on his island. Camacho said the man heard from some people that his daughter had some bad news to tell him. When he went to his daughter, he asked what was wrong, and asked her to be honest. She told him that she was pregnant. He asked her what she intended to do, and she said she would have the baby, she would go off to school, and they would figure something out.

Alexander says McCain helps Smith in Dem-leaning Beaver State

ST. PAUL, Minn. – U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton) is in a position to win re-election in part because of the relative popularity of Republican presidential candidate John McCain in the Beaver State, Senate Republican Conference Chair Lamar Alexander said today.

“That’s a Democratic-leaning state,” Alexander said at a Wednesday morning breakfast panel sponsored by National Journal.
