Timber Jobs: A Boost for Oregon's Economy

By Karla Kay Edwards

In today’s economy everyone is looking for ways to create jobs and increase revenues. That includes Senator Ron Wyden, who has drafted the Oregon Forest Restoration and Old Growth Protection Act, which would manage Oregon’s federally owned forests tree by tree instead of as a sustainable landscape. Though his goals to improve forest health while providing jobs in our rural communities is well intentioned, it will only create more bureaucracy while jeopardizing forest health and our rural communities’ livelihoods.

As the leading lumber producer in the U.S., Oregon has the opportunity to stimulate the economies of rural communities which depend on forestlands for jobs and revenue generation.

The Wyden Plan to Ban Big Bailout Bonuses: Who killed it?

Our own Senator Ron Wyden is getting huge attention from the national media -- since he was one of the earliest voices calling for a stop to excessive bonuses for bailed-out firms. Last night, he appeared on MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show. Watch the video (he's on at 4:45): Over at the Huffington Post, their front page had one of the biggest screamer headlines I've ever seen featured the question of the day in Washington - who killed Senator Wyden's amendment to cap excessive compensation for bailed-out firms? From Ariana Huffington's post: According to Wyden, he "spent hours on the Senate...

Wyden-Snowe amendment would have killed AIG bonuses

As I wrote last month, Senators Ron Wyden and Olympia Snowe proposed an amendment to the stimulus package that would have barred bailout-fund recipients from paying huge executive bonuses (and taken back the ones paid last year.) From the AP, back then: The $838 billion measure includes an amendment penalizing companies that paid bonuses greater than $100,000 to executives after receiving government rescue funds last year. The amendment would require the companies to repay within four months any portion of the bonus above $100,000 or face an excise tax of 35 percent on the portion of the bonus above $100,000....

HHS: It's Kathleen Sebelius

Sorry, Ron Wyden. Sorry, John Kitzhaber. The new Secretary of Health and Human Services is Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius. From Reuters: President Barack Obama has decided to nominate Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius to head the Department of Health and Human Services and will formally announce the decision at a White House ceremony on Monday, a U.S. official said on Saturday. "This evening, the president asked Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius to serve as his Secretary of Health and Human Services, and she accepted," the administration official said on condition of anonymity. "The president will formally announce the nomination on Monday afternoon...

Ezra floats a theory: Creeping Wydenism...?

Health-care guru (and all around big-brained) blogger Ezra Klein tosses the idea that Oregon Senator Ron Wyden's health care proposal is slowly but surely gaining juice among key players: And there are structural reasons that Wyden's plan might prove appealing to the administration. First, it's revenue positive at a time when the federal government faces yawning deficits and Congress might become more stingy. Second, it has demonstrated appeal to Republicans -- there are seven Republican co-sponsors -- at a moment when bipartisanship is in short supply. Klein goes on to say that its unlikely Wyden's plan will be the ultimate...

Will Gordon Smith run against Ron Wyden?

Over at NW Republican, Ted Piccolo is saying that state GOP chairman Bob Tiernan is telling people that Gordon Smith is thinking of staging a comeback by running against Ron Wyden in 2010. Tiernan brought up some issues that he thought were rather exciting. One is that Smith already has high name ID and it would force Wyden and the Democrats to spend a great deal of money and actually have to defend a senate seat they might normally simply take for granted. ... Personally I don't know what to think. Of course my first thought is that Wyden is...

Wyden pushes $3.2 billion payback of Wall Street bonuses

It seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle, but the stimulus package passed last week included an amendment authored by Senators Ron Wyden and Olympia Snowe. The Wyden-Snowe amendment would basically take back all those big Wall Street bonuses from the firms that took bailout money. From the AP: The $838 billion measure includes an amendment penalizing companies that paid bonuses greater than $100,000 to executives after receiving government rescue funds last year. The amendment would require the companies to repay within four months any portion of the bonus above $100,000 or face an excise tax of 35 percent...
