Senator Jeff Merkley Introduces the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA)

Back in the primaries for the US Senate race, I was an early supporter of Steve Novick, but after Jeff Merkley won the primary, I swallowed my pride, wrote the check, and trundled down to the Merkley office to volunteer as much as I could. Today, Jeff Merkley more than earned the support that I gave him. He was one of four Senators, including Susan Collins, Olympia Snow and Ted Kennedy, who introduced the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) into the United States Senate. He is continuing his commitment to workplace protections, as he pushed successfully for a state version of...

2010: Steve Novick for Governor?

In yet another installment of his series looking at possible 2010 gubernatorial candidates, the O's Jeff Mapes talks to Steve Novick. [Novick] appears ready to test his political appeal in the signature statewide contest of 2010: the race for governor. "There are a few more things that need to fall into place, but I think at this point I'm strongly inclined to do it," Novick told me this week. An announcement, he said, could come within the next month or two. I've always been a big fan of Brian Schweitzer, the Governor of Montana. Expect to hear more about Schweitzer...

On the Bus: Brewhaha

Last night I schlepped myself down to Backspace in Portland to take in Brewhaha, the latest quirky and fun Bus Project voter education program. The event featured a series of throw down debates between folks representing a variety of Oregon budget issues that may see the ax fall their way. An NCAA Basketball Championship-style bracket was given to facilitate audience participation...so we Carnaced the outcomes as best we could. The venerable Steve Novick was on hand to emcee, crack jokes and provide knowledgable tidbits about the Oregon budget. The debates pitted individuals representing various sectors of the Oregon budget against...

Courtney ‘thinking’ about 2010 gubernatorial run

PORTLAND -- State Senate President Peter Courtney (D-Salem) said Thursday he was considering a run for governor in 2010, but at the moment the race was far from his mind.

“If you’re asking me if I’m thinking about it, the answer is yes I’m thinking about it,” Courtney said at the Oregon Convention Center outside of the Leadership Summit meeting.

“But I got another project I got to finish first, and that is the Oregon legislature.”

Novick still interested in running for governor

PORTLAND – Former U.S. Senate candidate Steve Novick is still interested in running for Oregon’s open governor seat in 2010, he said Friday.

Novick, who was attending a speech by U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Portland) at Portland City Club, has also been thought of as a strong replacement for the Portland congressman if Blumenauer was tapped by President-elect Barack Obama to be Secretary of Transportation.

Maybe no cabinet for Kitzhaber, but what about governor?

Speculation over former Gov. John Kitzhaber being appointed to president-elect Barack Obama's administration barely had enough time to die down on Wednesday before the Associated Press, KATU, and Willamette Week began questioning whether Kitzhaber might be thinking about another run for the state’s chief executive.

Merkley, Oregon delegates proud of their convention moment

U.S. Senate candidate Oregon House Speaker Jeff Merkley (D-Portland) said Thursday he was pleased with the speech he gave to the Democratic Convention Wednesday night.

“I felt really good about it,” Merkley said. “It was very daunting, speaking to such a large crowd, and when I first started the speech the podium wasn’t quite right. But after about the second sentence it was fine. I just wanted to capture in my short amount of time what I can do for working families in the senate.”

Novick advises Merkley to embrace his inner geek

DENVER -- Former U.S. Senate candidate Steve Novick had some advice for the man who beat him in the primary, Oregon House Speaker Jeff Merkley (D-Portland), as Merkley heads home for the general election campaign.

"I've told Jeff that everyone should take advantage of their natural strength," Novick said. "And Jeff is a hard-working, honest, geek."
