Oregon State House: 5 closest races

Republicans staved off an even bigger Democratic majority in the Oregon State House by pulling out three of the closest victories in the state, according to official election results released by the Secretary of State’s office.

However, Democrats pulled out two close wins in House Districts 51 and 52, which had been Republican seats during the last cycle.

Oregonian endorses Lim, Nelsen, VanOrman

The Oregonian editorial board endorsed two Republicans and one Democrat in three of the states most competitive house races Sunday.

In all three races, the Oregonian urged readers to elect who they say as the more experienced candidate. That led to the paper giving the nod to Rep. John Lim (R-Gresham) in HD-50, to elect John Nelsen (R-Wood Village) in HD-49, and to elect Suzanne VanOrman (D-Hood River) in HD-52.

Wood Smith gets out the vote for presidential, congressional and state races

PORTLAND – The deadline for Oregonians to register to vote is two weeks away, so the chairwoman of the state Democratic Party, Meredith Wood Smith, took to the streets Tuesday to sign up as many voters as possible.

“It’s the feet on the street that make the difference,” Wood Smith said, clutching a clipboard of voter registration cards in Pioneer Square in Portland. “There is an opportunity this year to get people involved.”

Smith to skip reelection

The Oregonian is reporting that Corbett Rep. Patti Smith won't be running to reclaim her seat this year. 

"Another veteran Republican of the Oregon House -- Rep. Patti Smith of Corbett -- won't be seeking re-election this year.

"That opens up another seat for Democrats to try to widen their slim 31-29 lead. Democrats Suzanne VanOrman and Steve Richkind have already filed for House District 52, where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans."
