Teddy the K Loses Brain

Been waiting for it to happen. Oregon is looking at a minimum of 14 percent unemployment. The new budget numbers came out today, and they are horrible.

What does the Unigovernor propose?

"Today in an address to the City Club of Portland, Governor Ted Kulongoski announced an emergency jobs program to help put at least 12,000 unemployed Oregonians back to work this summer.

“'President Roosevelt gave hope to millions of unemployed Americans when he created the Civilian Conservation Corps and other jobs programs. We need to take the same kind of immediate action in Oregon,' Governor Kulongoski said.

"If approved by the legislature, jobs under the Governor’s plan would begin July 1 and target unemployed Oregonians seeking a salary range of $8.

2010: Randy Leonard for Governor?

On Thursday, the Portland Tribune reported on Capitol rumors that Portland City Commissioner (and BlueOregon contributor) Randy Leonard may be a candidate for Governor in 2010: When Sources Say made a recent trip to the Oregon Capitol, we were surprised – no, make that shocked – to learn that some legislators and lobbyists consider city Commissioner Randy Leonard a viable Democratic candidate for Oregon governor in 2010, when Gov. Ted Kulongoski finishes his second term. Leonard was mentioned right up there with such other high-profile possible contenders as Oregon Congressman Peter DeFazio, former Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber and left-leaning political...

Governor Lays Out Wrong Strategy for Tackling the Revenue Shortfall

Governor Ted Kulongoski’s “three year fiscal strategy” announced today threatens to aggravate the recession and the state’s fiscal condition as it undermines President Barack Obama’s effort to maintain state government spending. The President’s stimulus plan signed into law earlier this week is designed to maintain, and if possible enhance, state spending to help pull the nation out of the recession. Yet, the Governor proposes to spend only a portion of the stimulus money that’s available to spend on education and other public services this biennium. The Governor is choosing to cut spending on services that President Obama’s stimulus funds were...

Allen Alley throws his hat into the ring for Governor

Jeff Mapes: Alley, 54, becomes the first candidate to formally announce his candidacy for governor in 2010, although several other candidates from both parties are looking at the race. Gov. Ted Kulongoski, who is in his second term, is prevented by term limits from running again. Alley brings an unusual set of experiences to the governor's race. He is a former automotive and aerospace engineer who came to Oregon in 1992 and helped found Tualatin-based Pixelworks, which provides chips to the display industry. Alley ran an unsuccessful campaign for State Treasurer in 2008 against Ben Westlund. If Alley expects to...
