Merkley camp calls on Smith to return donations from convicted Alaska senator

After U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) was found guilty on federal corruption charges Monday, U.S. Senate candidate Jeff Merkley’s (D-Portland) campaign sent out a statement requesting that U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton) rid himself of any campaign funds he had ever received from Stevens.

A spokesman for U.S. Senate candidate Jeff Merkley (D-Portland) said Wednesday that the Oregon House Speaker has no intention of returning funds he received from U.S. Rep. Smith gave money to Stevens after investigation was public

U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith's political action committee gave money to indicted U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) three weeks after it became public knowledge that Stevens was under investigation by the FBI, according to Federal Election Commission files.

Smith's PAC, Impact America, gave $10,000 to Stevens on June 27, 2007. Twenty days earlier, Stevens admitted he was under investigation by the FBI in an interview with The Washington Post.

Smith to donate Stevens' contributions to charity

U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton) will give the money donated to his campaign by U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) to charity, according to Smith campaign spokeswoman Lindsay Gilbride. Gilbride did not elaborate as to which charity the money would go to.

Stevens was indicted by a federal grand jury in Washington Tuesday on seven charges, alleging he concealed hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of gifts and home renovations from VECO Corp., an Alaskan oil company.

Merkley calls on Smith to return Stevens’ money

House Speaker and U.S. Senate candidate Jeff Merkley (D-Portland) called on Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton) to return the $39,000 in campaign donations that he has received during his political career from Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), who was charged with bribery on Tuesday.

"Ted Stevens has been indicted on very serious ethical charges,” Merkley said. “These charges cast an ethical cloud on money he raised from oil companies and others, some of which he passed on to Gordon Smith."
