AG race moves from 'Bonusgate' to 'Parking-meter-gate'

Apparently, no allegation is too small in the increasingly heated battle to be Pennsylvania's attorney general.

The campaign for Republican Attorney General Tom Corbett on Tuesday criticized Democratic attorney general candidate John Morganelli for not paying $6 in quarters at a Harrisburg parking meter Monday. Morganelli, Northampton County's DA, was in the state's capitol to talk to the Pennsylvania Press Club at its monthly luncheon, an opportunity he used to criticize Corbett for how he has handled "Bonusgate."

But while Morganelli spoke, his car sat parked in downtown next to an expired parking meter. Brian Nutt, Corbett's campaign manager, said a passer-by noticed the car had an official parking pass from the Northampton County district attorney's office tucked inside the front windshield. He alerted Corbett's campaign, which took pictures of the car, the parking pass and the expired meter.

Nutt said Morganelli inappropriately used his parking pass to make sure he would not have to pay the meter or receive a parking ticket.

"It's very disappointing that someone who is a public official wold be so cavalier about using county resources to benefit his campaign," Nutt said. "If he is willing to place an official business for Northampton County sign in his window to get out of paying $6 to park, what else is he willing to use county resources to aid his campaign?"

Morganelli was incredulous when told of the Corbett campaign charge.

"It's crazy. It's ridiculous," he said.

The district attorney said when he parked, he put as many quarters as he had in the meter. He walked out later to put more money in it, but only had a $20 bill, he said.

"All I can is I put all my quarters I had in the meter," Morganelli said.

The allegation from Corbett's campaign is only the latest salvo between the two camps. Morganelli has run a highly critical campaign thus far, attacking the incumbent Corbett for mishandling Bonusgate, among other issues. Corbett's campaign has responded sharply in recent weeks, saying Morganelli is a "Monday morning quarterback" who never tells voters what he would actually do as attorney general.

Nutt defended the latest criticism to PolitickerPA.com.

Is this bell-weather issue in this campaign? absolutely not," he said. "But every step of the way (Morganelli) won't say what he'll do ... he has no idea what he's talking about, all he does is have criticism after criticism."
