Slander suit against Morganelli possible, Smith says

HARRISBURG -- State House Minority Leader Sam Smith (R-Punxsutawney) raised the possibility Wednesday of filing a slander lawsuit against Democratic attorney general candidate John Morganelli.

Smith said Morganelli has repeatedly accused his caucus of wrongdoing in connection with "Bonusgate," which the minority leader flatly denies.

"Mr. Morganelli is coming close to the line of slander," Smith told reporters during an informal question-and-answer session in the Capitol newsroom.

Such a lawsuit is unlikely, Smith said, because it would complicate an already "volatile situation." But he made his displeasure of being linked to the scandal clear to reporters.

House Republicans have sought out the attorney general's office to help cooperate with its investigation, Smith said. He said Morganelli's claim that House Republicans have destroyed evidence is wrong.
