Newman apologizes, says she didn't read controversial e-mail closely

Former Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Sandra Newman has apologized for signing her name to an e-mail sent last week that said Pennsylvania Jewish voters must vote against Barack Obama to prevent a second Holocaust.

"Because of my preoccupation with preparing legal challenges for significant issues relevant to proper election procedures, I did not pay close enough attention to an e-mail which was drafted by a worker for the McCain campaign," she wrote in a statement she sent to PolitickerPa.com.

Newman, chairwoman of the state GOP's Fair Elections Task Force, has been a vocal critic of ACORN, which she alleges has worked with the Democratic presidential nominee to steal the election. The state Republican Party has filed a lawsuit against the community organizing group, its affiliates and Secretary of the Commonwealth Pedro Cortes in what it says is an attempt to ensure a fair election.

The "worker for the McCain campaign" Newman mentioned was Bryan Rudnick. The former justice later clarified to PolitickerPA.com that she believed Rudnick, who was fired after a New York Times story detailed the e-mail, was hired by the Pennsylvania Republican Party, not the McCain campaign.

The e-mail, which also contained several factual errors about Obama's involvement with ACORN, drew a swift rebuke Pennsylvania Democrats. They demanded John McCain public repudiate the statement while campaigning in Pennsylvania.

Newman agreed it went too far.

"Some of my language was inappropriate and intemperate," she said. "I apologize to anyone who was offended by this misguided e-mail. I am supporting Senator John McCain for president, and I hope you will not allow a stray e-mail message to alter your opinion in this important presidential election.
