Boyle, Taubenberger still tussling over misleading campaign literature

PHILADELPHIA-Polls are about to start closing, but two state House candidates in northeast Philadelphia are still fighting over factually-incorrect campaign literature.

After it was revealed that ads being run by Republican Matt Taubenberger, which labeled Democrat Brendan Boyle a "tax deadbeat," were based on incorrect city information, a Common Pleas Court judge issued an injunction ordering a stop to any mailings or Election Day handouts continuing the false campaign attack.

Boyle's campaign said this evening that while the court order has largely been followed, there were still a "handful of places" where the misleading literature was being distributed.

"It's a shame that they would still resort to that after Judge [Gary] DiVito's order," Boyle's political director Seth Kaplan said.

Still, he added, "I think for the most part, they obeyed things."

Taubenberger spokesman Tom Corcoran denied that the campaign had in any way violated the order.

"I know of no negative literature being passed out regarding property taxes and Brendan Boyle," Corcoran said. "We made every effort to follow [DiVito's] decision."

The two are vying to replace retiring state Rep. George Kenney (R-Philadelphia) in the 170th Legislative District.

Both campaign said voter turnout was impressive, in some divisions exceeding a whopping 75 percent.
