Longtime Philly Democratic icon dies

Carol Ann Campbell, who was for years an icon and fixture of Philadelphia's Democratic Party, has died, The Daily News reports.

Campbell served as secretary of the Democratic City Committee and also briefly as a City Councilwoman. Reports of her age apparently varied from 64 to 70. She had been confined to a wheelchair in recent years and a cause of death was not immediately released.

In a statement, Mayor Michael Nutter said he was saddened by her passing.

"Carol spent a lifetime serving her neighborhood, her community, and her city," Nutter said. "She was a stalwart of the Democratic Party and was a major figure in the world of Philadelphia politics. When I first entered public service, Carol was a source of encouragement, information and insight. It is the help and support that she provided to me that I remember and reflect upon at this time. This is a very sad day for Philadelphia."
