Murphy ‘honored’ people want him to run for Senate

NEW YORK-Fresh off his freshman reelection bid, U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy didn't tip his hand when asked Friday night whether or not he will make a Senate run in 2010.

"I'm focused on my job," Murphy, who represents the 8th Congressional District, said during U.S. Sen. Bob Casey's (D-Pa.) party here. "I'm honored that people are encouraging me."

Murphy has been reported to be interested in challenging U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.). He is one of several Democrats considering a run, and his credentials as a fiscal conservative and his prowess as a fundraiser could prove useful against the state's senior Republican.

Asked what the calculus of his decision would be, Murphy said simply: "Whatever is in the best interest of the country and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania."
