Onorato promises to veto any opt-out of Public Option if he's Governor

From an email from Dan Onorato, Allegheny County Executive and PA gubernatorial candidate:
Dear friends:

On Monday, the U.S. Senate announced that its most recent healthcare bill includes a provision that allows states to choose whether or not to offer a "public option." Basically, states will be able to decide whether or not to offer their residents access to low-cost health insurance.

As Governor, I will veto any effort by the Pennsylvania General Assembly to "opt out" of the public option.

It is critical for Pennsylvania's employers and workers that we help lower healthcare costs. I believe that the proposed public option will help expand competition and reduce prices while maintaining our current fee-for-service system.

Onorato's Announcement

As seen by Jim O'Toole of the P-G:

Basking in the afterglow of the G-20 summit, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato gave a hometown kickoff to his bid for governor last night before crowd of several hundred supporters and a smattering of vocal opponents.

Mr. Onorato, 48, cited a litany of environmental and development achievements from his two terms as county executive and said they offered a preview of the leadership he would provide for Pennsylvania.

He said the recent economic summit had given an international showcase to those accomplishments.

But the G-20 giveth and the G-20 taketh away.

The North Side native's speech was repeatedly interrupted by demonstrators loudly protesting the actions of police officers confronting crowds in Oakland and elsewhere during the event two weeks ago.

Dan Onorato: Sweet & Sour

While Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato makes his run PA governor official today, he is not without his detractors.

From Dan Onorato:

I wanted you to be among the first to know that I am going to officially announce my candidacy for Governor with a three-day tour across Pennsylvania beginning Tuesday, October 6th.

I believe that Pittsburgh's renaissance can be replicated across Pennsylvania. We can stimulate our economy by investing in green technology. We can put Pennsylvanians back to work by creating next-generation jobs in innovative fields. We can provide every child with a quality education by making college more affordable.

But I can only do this with your support.

The Trib Editorial Board vs ACORN. Again.

I guess we gotta do this every few weeks. The last time was July 2.

Here's what they write today:
On the "Watch List": Dan Onorato and Luke Ravenstahl. The Allegheny County chief executive and the mayor of Pittsburgh have begun an eight-month push to bolster census-response rates. Indeed, an accurate count is to the benefit of all. But here's a critical question for them:

Do they support the involvement of ACORN in the survey process? That would be the same ACORN that's accused in a number of states, Pennsylvania included, of voter registration fraud. That would be the same ACORN that aided the subprime mortgage mess by bullying banks to lend to those with dubious financial means.

Onorato on drink-tax criticism: Bring it on

NEW YORK -- Four decades of Pennsylvania political history suggest after eight years of a Democratic governor, Ed Rendell, the state is poised to elect a Republican its top executive.

But Allegheny County Chief Executive and rumored front-runner for the 2010 Democratic gubernatorial nomination Dan Onorato doesn't believe history is about to repeat.

"That's totally irrelevant," Onorato told PolitickerPA.com shortly after a reception he hosted at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel ended.

Wagner, gubernatorial rumors swirling, holds PC to decry COLAs, school violence

HARRISBURG -- Rumored Democratic 2010 gubernatorial candidate Jack Wagner, just re-elected the state's auditor general, made two of his positions clear Wednesday at a Capitol press conference.

He's against lining lawmakers' pockets with taxpayer money, and he's in favor of keeping schools safe.

Those stances don't exactly separate him from the myriad other rumored gubernatorial candidates, or, for that matter, any politician. But Wagner, in his capacity as auditor general, spoke strongly about each topic in front of reporters Wednesday.

Rendell looks to stay neutral in Democratic primary to replace him

PHILADELPHIA-As the state's leading Democrat, it's not surprising that Gov. Ed Rendell has close relationships with many of the party's candidates hoping to replace him in two years. He has worked closely on legislative matters with some, while others have been major campaign contributors.

But until Democrats pick their candidate to run for governor, Rendell says he'll try to stay above the fray.

"It's likely that I won't support anyone directly in the primary," he told PolitickerPA.com.

Knox seeks support for 2010 gubernatorial run

DENVER-Amid the sea of political insiders throwing back cocktails here Monday evening, Tom Knox stood out.

The millionaire Philadelphia businessman is not a delegate to the Democratic convention. But as he lays the groundwork for a possible run for governor in 2010, Knox, who almost won the Democratic mayoral primary in Philadelphia last year, is seeking support from all corners of the state.

At a cocktail party for the Pennsylvania delegation, he meandered throughout the room, schmoozing with political stars up and down the state hierarchy.

As they ate, they shared their excitement for being at the Democratic Party's historic nominating convention here.

And then, they listened to the big wigs.
