Harper projected to easily retain seat in HD-61

PLYMOUTH MEETING--State Rep. Kate Harper (R-Lower Gwynedd) was projected to easily dispatch Democrat Frank Custer Tuesday night, allowing Montgomery County Republicans to hold onto a seat that Democrats had hotly-contested.

With all precincts reporting in the 61st Legislative District, Harper had 12-point edge over Custer, beating him by more than 4,000 votes.

Though Harper could not be reached late Tuesday, Custer congratulated her in a brief interview here with PolitickerPA.com.

Down-ballot races are a high-stakes game for MontCo GOP

It's been a tough couple years for the Montgomery County Republican Committee. Registration gains that were already moving in the Democrats' favor accelerated greatly with the excitement over the presidential race. Factions of the party are split, with the two Republican County Commissioners locked in a political feud that has given Democrats more control of local policy, and seats long-held by the GOP seem increasingly in danger.

In MontCo’s 61st, a state House races grows more contentious

The race between state Rep. Kate Harper (R-Lower Gwynedd) and Democrat Frank Custer has grown significantly more contentious in recent weeks, with attacks flying and recriminations from both sides.

Custer is trying to unseat Harper in Montgomery County's 61st Legislative District. County Democrats are pegging it as one of the down-ballot seats they hope to pick up, but being a more traditional suburb that some others in the area, Republicans think it's one they can hold onto.
