Sturla beats out Gerber for Democratic policy chair

HARRISBURG -- State Rep. Mike Sturla (D-Lancaster County) has beat out state Rep. Mike Gerber (D-Montgomery County) for House Democratic policy chair.

If Tuesday's leadership elections are any indication, the policy chair position is prime ground to move on to higher positions. Each of this election cycle's two policy chairs, state reps. Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny County) and Todd Eachus (D-Luzerne County) moved up the leadership pecking order Tuesday. Turzai is now minority whip, Eachus was elected majority leader.

DeWeese stays in leadership, as whip

Embattled state representative Bill DeWeese has once again survived and retained a high-profile leadership position in the House Democratic caucus -- majority whip.

It's a demotion for the majority leader, who was also once House Speaker, but he'll surely take it after being implicated in connection with "Bonusgate" and facing the calls from more than a dozen colleagues to step down earlier this year.

HARRISBURG -- The Allegheny County House Democratic Caucus made its play for leadership Wednesday night, selecting state Rep. Frank Dermody (D-Allegheny County) as its choice for majority leader.

Meanwhile, current but embattled Majority Leader Bill DeWeese (D-Greene County) has not received, at least not yet, the support of his own Southwest Caucus, which decided Tuesday night not to endorse anybody for a leadership position.

Gov. press conference roundup: Rendell says he's not leaving for Washington

HARRISBURG -- It's the question Gov. Ed Rendell has been asked ad nauseum since Barack Obama's election: Are you leaving for Washington?

His answer Wednesday was the same one he's given every time.

"I'm not going," the governor said a press conference in the Capitol.

He hasn't been asked, he's unlikely to be asked, and he would have to reluctantly decline even if he were, Rendell said.

The boys are back in town -- some of them, anyway

Minus their Senate counterparts, members of the state House return to session Wednesday afternoon for the first day of their lame-duck session.

Session is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., with several committee meetings planned through the day. And don't be surprised to see Democratic leaders criticizing Senate Republicans at some point for not returning to work on health care legislation, as the governor asked them Monday.

Eachus: Time for a Democratic speaker

State Rep. Todd Eachus, fresh off guiding House Democrats to slightly expanding their majority, told PolitickerPA.com early Wednesday morning that it's time someone from his caucus become speaker of the House.

Republican state Rep. Dennis O'Brien has held the position the last two years after Democrats, holding just a 102-101 majority, were unable to install one of their own to the position.

"Dennis is a man of honor," Eachus said. "But with more Democrats (in the House) I think we need to try reach a consensus on a (Democratic) speaker."

DeWeese indicates he's still eyeing leadership

WAYNESBURG -- Could Bill DeWeese retain his House seat and his position as majority leader?

He accomplished the first Tuesday night, and he indicated to reporters during his victory celebration afterward he's going to try hard for the second.

DeWeese touted his strong partnership with fellow Democratic leaders Dwight Evans and Keith McCall. He talks "every day" with Evans, DeWeese said, and McCall contributed to his campaign and called him right before election returns began filing in.
