The Trib Does It Again. With A Twist

This week's Midweek Briefing:
Newsmax.com's Chris Ruddy says what a growing number of War on Terror watchers are saying -- it's time to reduce our troop presence in Afghanistan. And he favors a plan put forth by Vice President Joe Biden "that involves keeping a smaller force (there) and focusing it on counterterrorism," especially against those nasty al-Qaida cells in neighboring Pakistan. It's likely the best way to better prepare us to handle the growing Iranian threat.

Pitts: Obama stimulus a bust so far

Not Surprising, Stimulus Isn't Very Stimulating

By Congressman Joe Pitts

Many have said all along that big government spending on liberal policies will not help this nation get out of our economic woes. Unfortunately, the recent release of numerous analyses on the subject is proving that stance correct.

The reports and analysis of the $787 billion economic "stimulus" plan have now begun to appear. Not surprisingly, the objective measures seem to indicate the government is having a hard time effectively and efficiently spending the money. For those of us who opposed the plan, this comes as no surprise. But for the many people around the country struggling to get by, these reports add only insult to injury.

Pa. is presidential central this weekend

For the first time since the state's critical April primary contest, Pennsylvania this weekend will truly be the epicenter of presidential politics, with hardly a moment going by without campaign action on both sides of the aisle.

Candidates from both tickets will be in town for fundraisers. Democratic nominee Barack Obama will make four campaign stops throughout Philadelphia on Saturday, marking his first visit in the City of Brotherly Love in months. His running mate Joe Biden will be joined by both Bill and Hillary Clinton at a rally in Scranton on Sunday.

Obama campaign responds with pro-coal TV ad

In what is clearly a direct response to GOP criticism, the campaign for Barack Obama has begun airing a TV ad that touts the Democratic presidential nominee's commitment to clean coal.

McCain airs new radio ad in Pa. attacking Biden's 'clean coal' comment

The campaign for John McCain has launched a new Pennsylvania radio ad that attacks the Democratic presidential ticket for opposing new coal plants.

The ad cites comments made by Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden at a campaign event in Ohio, where the senator tells a supporter he and Barack Obama will not build anymore coal plants.

The one-minute ad touts coal's importance to the state's economy and to the country's quest for energy independence before replaying Biden's remarks.
