Pennsylvania: Luke Ravenstahl

November 24, 2009 - 08:54 pm

Fear Factor

The Ravenstahls have hired Philadelphia attorney Richard Sprague to represent them in contacts with the media. According to Sprague, his job is "to prevent there being a whole bunch of smears, innuendoes, defamatory things being suggested. If that is so, I will bring appropriate legal action."

In light of the background on Sprague found at the Pittsburgh City Paper, this will now be 2PJ's Official Statement on the Ravenstahl Separation:
Mayor Luke Ravenstahl is the bestest mayor in the world! Richard Sprague is the bestest lawyer in the world! The Ravenstahls had and have the bestest marriage in the world! The separation is no more and no less than an Act of God.

Not With a Bang, But A Wimper

The P-G endorses Mayor Luke.

After describing Luke's two opponents, the P-G praises by the process of elimination:

Both Dok Harris and Kevin Acklin are informed, committed Pittsburghers. While they could have an impact as City Council members, it's hard to argue that either has a shot at winning the mayor's office and the ability to take charge of the city's $453 million budget and 3,500 employees.

That leaves the incumbent, with whom we have had our differences. After three years as mayor, he has yet to articulate a vision for the future. He does not have a reputation for working with the state legislative delegation.

Debating the Mayoral Debates

From Camp Acklin:

MAYORAL CAMPAIGNS ACCEPT ACKLIN DEBATE CHALLENGE, REFUSE TOWN HALL FORUM

PITTSBURGH - After three months of challenges and delays, the competing candidates for Mayor of Pittsburgh have accepted Kevin Acklin's call to debate, agreeing to participate in three televised events. Neither Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, nor Franco "Dok" Harris, agreed to take part in a town hall forum debate, which the Acklin Campaign proposed and at least one local station was interested in hosting.

"I'm thrilled that voters will be able to see all three of us on the same stage," Acklin said, "But I'm also disappointed that the other candidates refused to answer questions directly from voters.

Dan Onorato: Sweet & Sour

While Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato makes his run PA governor official today, he is not without his detractors.

From Dan Onorato:

I wanted you to be among the first to know that I am going to officially announce my candidacy for Governor with a three-day tour across Pennsylvania beginning Tuesday, October 6th.

[snip]

I believe that Pittsburgh's renaissance can be replicated across Pennsylvania. We can stimulate our economy by investing in green technology. We can put Pennsylvanians back to work by creating next-generation jobs in innovative fields. We can provide every child with a quality education by making college more affordable.

But I can only do this with your support.

Tony Norman on the G20 Police Response.

Tony Norman writes:"As a group, the police responded admirably," Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said resisting the urge to identify with people close to his age, but more diminished in power and stature. Mr. Ravenstahl couldn't afford to acknowledge what anyone with access to YouTube can see with their own eyes -- that there was a full-scale breakdown in public order on the part of the cops. The images of the brutal assault on Pitt students and passers-by caught up in an indiscriminate and chaotic police sweep at the University of Pittsburgh on Friday night will surely be a cautionary tale to the next American mayor silly enough to consider hosting a G-20 summit I'll say it again. Luke Ravenstahl owns this.

The Trib Editorial Board vs ACORN. Again.

I guess we gotta do this every few weeks. The last time was July 2.

Here's what they write today:
On the "Watch List": Dan Onorato and Luke Ravenstahl. The Allegheny County chief executive and the mayor of Pittsburgh have begun an eight-month push to bolster census-response rates. Indeed, an accurate count is to the benefit of all. But here's a critical question for them:

Do they support the involvement of ACORN in the survey process? That would be the same ACORN that's accused in a number of states, Pennsylvania included, of voter registration fraud. That would be the same ACORN that aided the subprime mortgage mess by bullying banks to lend to those with dubious financial means.

Five City Councilors Shirk Responsibilities and Rubber Stamp Mayor/Lamar

(Click graphic to view larger image)

Looks like I picked a bad day to watch the live Sotomayor hearings instead of the live City Council meeting.

[sigh]

Today, the majority of the City Council of Pittsburgh decided to deny the public the right to hear from nominees to the Planning Commission, the Zoning Board of Adjustment, the Historic Review Commission and the Shade Tree Commission.

Today, the majority of the City Council of Pittsburgh decided to deny the nominees the right to appear before the public.

Today, the majority of the City Council of Pittsburgh decided to themselves forgo interviewing twelve nominees for these boards.

Today, the majority of the City Council of Pittsburgh decided that "the mayor appoints and we approve.

The Luckiest Boy in the Whole Wide World!

Life is always a day at the beach for
the luckiest boy in the whole wide world.

Lil Mayor Luke Ravenstahl has (temporarily) dodged another bullet.

Last week Pittsburgh City Council voted to compel Ravenstahl to appear before them to answer questions about the five year Amended Act 47 Recovery plan (Lukey was on vacation last week and seemingly everyone who mattered in his administration was unavailable).

Today's Penguins Stanley Cup victory parade pushes back the showdown until Wednesday.

This is a mayor who is no stranger to luck. He came into the office on a fluke and engendered enough sympathy to become Pittsburgh's Favorite Grandson (the one who can do no wrong no matter

Following the money

While blogger Bram Reichbaum asks where Lil Mayor Luke Ravenstahl's campaign dollars are being spent (as I did here) and even ties Ravenstahl to disgraced former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich, I say if you've really been paying attention, it's obvious where the bucks are going -- Rogaine and Hair Club for Men don't pay for themselves!* -- and if Lukey doesn't, uh, stay on top of things he could end up looking like this:

And, then he might not be Pittsburgh's favorite grandson anymore...

* After all, it wouldn't be the first time he spent campaign dollars on his appearance.
