Hart says she won't run again

Republican Melissa Hart's 12-point loss to U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire (D-McCandless) was largely lost amid the flurry of last week's results. The race was one of the state's most closely watched this summer but took a backseat to other congressional and state elections when polls showed the first-term incumbent opening a double-digit lead over the woman he beat in 2006.

Hart had counted on 2008 being more favorable than 2006. But in an interview with PolitickerPA.com recently, she said that clearly wasn't the case.

Hart campaign confident about fundraising

Melissa Hart's campaign manager, Alicia Collins, knows she has enough money to unseat U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire (D-McCandless) in the 4th Congressional District.

After all, the campaign has about three times as much cash on hand than Altmire's did in 2006, when he defeated the then-incumbent Hart by a few percentage points.

New Hart ad seeks to link Altmire to Pelosi

Call it the Republican version of Democrats' constant attempts to link GOP lawmakers to President Bush.

A new ad being aired by Congressional candidate Melissa Hart tries to link U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire (D-McCandless) to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, while also blaming people's economic troubles on tax increases.

"We spend our nights worrying how we're going to make ends meet, and our days working as hard as we can to only get furter behind," the narrator says.

Hart is mounting a competitive challenge to Altmire in the 4th Congressional District.

Carney, Altmire stick to opposition of bailout

The two vulnerable House Democrats from Pennsylvania who voted against the first version of the bailout bill held strong in their opposition Friday, casting no votes on an amended Senate bill that passed the House.

Both U.S. Reps. Chris Carney (D-Dimock) and Jason Altmire (D-D-McCandless) voted against the legislation. Both are facing tough reelection battles in conservative-leaning districts.

Carney faces Republican Chris Hackett in the 10th Congressional District, while Altmire is being challenged by Melissa Hart in the 4th Congressional District.

Those who voted against bailout a 'bunch of vulnerable freshman,' Hart says

Republican Congressional candidate Melissa Hart disputed that her opponent, U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire (D-McCandless), defected from his party when he voted Monday against a $700 billion bailout plan.

"Not really," she told PolitickerPA.com. "I think what you saw was a whole bunch of vulnerable freshman voting against it."

Ninety-five Democrats voted against the plan, which was defeated 228-205. One-hundred-and-forty Democrats voted in favor of the bill.

Altmire: 'Hundreds' of constituents told me they're against bailout

U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire (R-McCandless), shortly after voting against a $700 billion bailout plan for Wall Street, indicated in a statement Monday he will oppose a bailout of any kind.

"I agree the economy is struggling, but the free market works properly only if there is a downside to risk," Altmire said. "It is not the government's role to reward bad decisions or nullify the downside to investment risks."

"Hundreds" of constituents told him they opposed the plan, Altmire said.

"I'm not going to go into that; I don't think it's necessary," said Tess Mullen, Altmire's communication's director.

She emphasized Altmire has never missed a vote during his nearly two years in office.
