Pat Toomey on Abortion

Don't know if you caught this one. Here's Pat Toomey, GOP candidate against Senator Arlen Specter, on Hardball (via Crooksandliars):Toomey: I think that Roe v Wade was wrongly defined, wrongly decided and I think states should be free to restrict abortion and I would support legislation in Pennsylvania that would ban abortion and I would suggest that we have penalties for doctors who perform them if we were able to pass that law.

Matthews: Would you put people in jail for performing abortions?

Toomey: At some point doctors performing abortions, I think would be subject to that sort of penalty.

Toomey, in the same interview a few seconds earlier, says he's on the "center right." I wonder who he thinks is on the "far" right.

PA State Senator Jane Orie Considers Challenging Pat Toomey in US Senate Primary

PoliticsPA reports that sources have told them that PA Senate’s majority whip Jane Orie has been meeting with Republican leaders and the NRSC in Washington about a possible run for the US Senate.

According to PoliticsPA:
[M]any Republican leaders have continued to worry privately about Toomey’s electability statewide, fearing he is too conservative for a state that gave Barack Obama a 10-point victory over John McCain last year.
Ummm, huh? I never really thought of Orie as being anything less than strongly conservative.

This is a person, after all, who believes:

  • Abortions should always be illegal, while schools should teach abstinence-only sex education, while being against expanding state funding for pre-natal and infant care programs available in the state, including immunizations.

Tom Ridge And The Fairness Doctrine

The GOP circular firing squad is aiming at Tom Ridge. As usual the GOP gets its history wrong and their media mouthpieces (in this case the Tribune-Review) omits some important data.

From Washington Monthly:
Arlen Specter left the Republican Party when Pennsylvania Republicans rejected his relative moderation. Pessimistic about Pat Toomey's chances, GOP leaders have been scrambling, looking for a credible Republican alternative.

It appears the party has rallied behind former Gov. Tom Ridge (R) as their new go-to guy. Ridge, a two-term chief executive and the first DHS Secretary, is probably the only Republican with a realistic shot at winning the statewide race.

Lowman Henry: Toomey can still beat Specter

The much-anticipated showdown between Arlen Specter and Pat Toomey, which was scheduled for the 2010 Republican Party Primary in Pennsylvania, won't take place now that Specter has bolted to the Democratic Party.

Instead, the grudge match may be held in November 2010, assuming Toomey and Specter can win their respective party primaries.

So who comes out ahead?

Lowman S. Henry, director and CEO of the Lincoln Institute of Public Opinion Research and one of the most astute political analysts in Pennsylvania, believes Toomey can beat Specter in a one-on-one contest.

From a new Henry column:
In the potential general election match-up between Specter and Toomey, Toomey will have a number of advantages.

What They're Saying

CNN:
Veteran Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter switched from the Republican to the Democratic Party on Tuesday, saying he has found himself increasingly "at odds with the Republican philosophy."

"This is a painful decision. I know I'm disappointing many of my colleagues," he said at a news conference announcing the move. "The disappointment runs in both directions.
O'Toole of the Post-Gazette:
Sen. Arlen Specter has represented the Republican Party in the Senate longer than any other Pennsylvanian in history. His decision to abandon the GOP, while greeted with a collective "good riddance" by many conservatives, is the latest blow to a party battered by repeated losses in Pennsylvania and across the nation.

Specter to Switch Parties

This just in:

Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter will switch his party affiliation from Republican to Democrat, according to sources informed on the decision.

Specter's decision would give Democrats a 60 seat filibuster proof majority in the Senate assuming Democrat Al Franken is eventually sworn in as the next Senator from Minnesota. (Former Sen. Norm Coleman is appealing Franken's victory in the state Supreme Court.)

Specter as a Democrat would also fundamentally alter the 2010 calculus in Pennsylvania as he was expected to face a difficult primary challenge next year from former Rep. Pat Toomey. The only announced Democrat in the race is former National Constitution Center head Joe Torsella although several other candidates are looking at the race.

Wow.

Cilliza: Nat'l GOP Backs Arlen

The Fix:
National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn released a letter today offering a full-throated endorsement of Sen. Arlen Specter in his coming primary against former congressman Pat Toomey, a decision driven by a concern that the challenger cannot win a general election in Pennsylvania.
The letter can be found here.

No matter what the Club-for-Growth folks have to say, Toomey's in the same boat he was 6 years ago, though the boat is in drastically different waters. From Cornyn's letter:
My job as head of the NRSC is to guide the GOP back to a majority in the Senate.
That's it right there.

Santorum taps Turzai, Orie as possible Specter opponents

Former Senator Rick Santorum pointed to state Rep. Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny County) and state Sen. Jane Orie (R-Allegheny County) as the two front-runners to challenge U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter in a 2010 primary should Pat Toomey decline to run again.
