The President's Speech To The Nations School Kids

Here's an excerpt uncovered by Tommy Tomlinson, columnist for the Charlotte Observer:
We've been working to take an economy that was in bad shape and get it moving and growing again; take our national defense and make it first-rate again after a long period of decline; and to restore reason, respect and reality to our foreign policy. And I think it's fair to say that we've made a good deal of progress.
Tomlinson comments:
Those of you who were worried about what he would say: You were right all along. It is nothing but politics.
And:

You were also right about him trying to indoctrinate the children of America into his cult of personality.

Wise Words From EJ Dionne

Remember this?

EJ Dionne continues the idea:
Try a thought experiment: What would conservatives have said if a group of loud, scruffy leftists had brought guns to the public events of Ronald Reagan or George W. Bush?

How would our friends on the right have reacted to someone at a Reagan or a Bush speech carrying a sign that read: "It is time to water the tree of liberty"? That would be a reference to Thomas Jefferson's declaration that the tree "must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

Pardon me, but I don't think conservatives would have spoken out in defense of the right of every American Marxist to bear arms or to shed the blood of tyrants.

Brian Kilmeade Is An Idiot

Here's why.

As every story I've read hat tips Gawker, I'll have to assume they have the original story. Here's what they say:
To stave off dementia! Yes, today the befuddled screech owls on Fox & Friends were discussing a study that states that those that stay married fend off Alzheimer's and dementia better than lonely divorcees. Brian Kilmeade took issue with this.

He didn't trust the study because it was done in Finland and Sweden and the Finns and the Swedes stay "pure" by only marrying each other. Whereas in America, everyone marries everyone (so long as they're white and their partner is white.

More On Sally Kern

Hey, you remember Sally Kern, right?

She's the Oklahoma wingnut who declared that the Pittsburgh city council was controlled by gays.

Well here she goes again. In a proclamation titled "Oklahoma Citizen's Proclamation for Morality" and signed "on the second day of July in the year of our Lord Christ Two Thousand and Nine" State Representative Kern declares, among other things, that those signing the proclamation believe that:
[O]ur economic woes are consequences of our greater national moral crisis
And that:
[T]his nation has become a world leader in promoting abortion, pornography, same sex marriage, sex trafficking, divorce, illegitimate births, child abuse, and many other forms of debauchery
The nation is promoting same sex marriage? And divorce is a form of debauchery? NOTE: I'm not saying that any of the other things she's listed ARE forms of debauchery, mind you.

Salon Debunks Some Myths.

Here.

Here's an example:

Myth: Led by Obama, Democrats are planning to reinstitute the Federal Communications Commission's Fairness Doctrine, eviscerating right-wing talk radio in the process.

Who's spreading it: Rush Limbaugh; Sen. Jim DeMint

What they believe: The government used to require radio and TV broadcasters to devote some of their airtime to public policy discussions, and to provide "contrasting views" on the matters discussed. The FCC abolished the rule in 1987, under President Ronald Reagan. The next year, America was first treated to the dulcet tones of Rush Limbaugh's national radio show, thus ushering in a golden age of broadcast wingnuttery, interspersed with ads for mattresses.

Yo. This One's For All The Young Conservatives

Fear not movement conservatives, Stiltz and Serious C are here for you.

From their website:
Stiltz & Serious C are a duo from Dartmouth College and co-founders of the thriving Young Conservatives Facebook group. In a day where conservatives are seen as close-minded and archaic, these fresh hip hop artists bring a new perspective to a long-standing philosophy. They are a bastion of progress in the liberal recesses of the northeast, throwing down their message amidst much adversity. Instead of sinking into the assemblage of the self satisfied, Stiltz & Serious C challenge our hearts and minds with lyrics that makes us think about the current evolution of our American society.

Shribman on Torture

This weekend David M. Shribman, the executive editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette posted a column on torture.

Well not exactly on torture, but on why the Obama Administration should "look to the future, not to the past" and just let it go.

He begins with some historical precednts:
When Thomas Jefferson succeeded John Adams, a contest that put America on such a different footing that it is remembered today as the Revolution of 1800, he did not seek to put members of the Adams administration on trial. When Warren G. Harding followed Woodrow Wilson in the White House in 1921, he did not put Edith Galt Wilson on trial for usurping the office of the presidency after Wilson's stroke.

Torture. Waterboarding. Disgusting.

Emptywheel is reporting:
According to the May 30, 2005 Bradbury memo, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was waterboarded 183 times in March 2003 and Abu Zubaydah was waterboarded 83 times in August 2002.
From page 37 of the memo:
The CIA used the waterboard "at least 83 times during August 2002" in the interrogation of Zubaydah. IG Report at 90, and 183 times during March 2003 in the interrogation of KSM, see id. at 91.
And sums it up:
The CIA wants you to believe waterboarding is effective. Yet somehow, it took them 183 applications of the waterboard in a one month period to get what they claimed was cooperation out of KSM.
