New Dent ad seizes on Bennett's bank gaffe

A new ad being aired by U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent (R-Allentown) seeks to continue capitalizing on his Democratic opponent's well-publicized gaffe during a recent debate.

His opponent, Sam Bennett, erroneously said that two area banks had failed, prompting the local TV station airing the debate to take the extraordinary steps of muting what she said and blurring her mouth when she said it.

"Sam Bennett made a big mistake that could have hurt you," says the ad, embedded below and airing on local network and cable.

Dent still outraising Bennett

Even while Democrat Sam Bennett's fundraising numbers have steadily picked up, they are still eclipsed by her 15th Congressional District opponent U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent (R-Allentown).

Dent raised over $442,000 in the third quarter, leaving him with almost $763,000 in cash on hand, according to his campaign finance report filed Wednesday.

Bennett has $245,000 on hand.

Woops! Bennett says banks failed when they didn’t

Call it a financially dangerous gaffe.

During a debate with U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent (R-Allentown) on Friday, Democrat Sam Bennett said that Sovereign and Wachovia banks had failed.

Only problem is they hadn't, and still haven't. And in the midst of a perilous credit crunch and flailing confidence in financial institutions, the Bennett campaign didn't want to spook voters into making a run on the banks and proving Bennett right.

Three Pa. Republicans shifted to support new bailout bill

Three House Republicans from Pennsylvania who had voted against the original $700-billion bailout bill on Monday changed course Friday to support an amended bailout package that had already passed the Senate.

House Republicans were largely blamed for the original legislation's demise, and some lawmakers may have been bending to changing public opinion after stock markets plummeted following Monday's vote.

U.S. Reps. Bill Shuster (R-Frankstown), Jim Gerlach (R-West Pikeland) and Charlie Dent (R-Allentown) all voted for the bill Friday after opposing it Monday.

Challenges aside, Bennett confident on fundraising

Democrat Sam Bennett has a tough challenge in taking on U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent (R-Allentown) in the 15th Congressional District. With Pennsylvania full of congressional races considered to be more competitive, and Democratic incumbents in vulnerable position, it is no doubt a difficult climate in which to raise the money needed to unseat Dent.

For Bennett, another campaign manager out

With her campaign for Congress just starting to build some momentum, Democrat Sam Bennett has had to replace her campaign manager once again.

Kathryn Seck left the campaign after only a few months on staff, The Morning Call reports. That follows the departure of campaign manager Hannah Miller. Seck will be replaced by Josh Levin, who the campaign said has led on high-profile campaigns in more than half-a-dozen state.
