McCall becomes House Speaker; Metcalfe bid dies in own caucus

HARRISBURG -- State Rep. Keith McCall (D-Carbon County) was officially elected Speaker of the House on Tuesday after receiving the full support of his 104-member Democratic caucus.

McCall, whose ascension to the position was mostly a formality after receiving his caucus' support during leadership elections, received five more votes that Republican lawmaker Sam Smith (R-Jefferson County), who received 99 votes.

House Republicans say their 'slush fund' smaller than others

House Republican leadership said Wednesday that the findings of an General Assembly audit showing it has $7 million more stashed away in its reserve account than any other legislative leadership team doesn't tell the whole story.

An audit released Wednesday by the Legislative Audit Advisory Commission showed House Republican Floor Leader Sam Smith holds $21 million in a special leadership account. The floor leader with the next highest amount, House Majority Leader Bill DeWeese (D-Greene County), has just $14 million.

Civera staying as minority appropriations chair

State Rep. Mario Civera has been re-elected minority appropriations chairman.

He reportedly faced a challenge from state Rep. John Maher. 

The top three position in the House Republican Caucus appear to be set, with House Minority Leader Sam Smith and Civera retaining their positions and former Policy Chairman Mike Turzai becoming minority whip.

House Republicans discussed expelling O'Brien

Speaker of the House Dennis O'Brien, a Republican by name but installed as House leader this session by Democrats, survived an attempt this afternoon to be expelled from his caucus.

Newly re-elected House Minority Leader Sam Smith confirmed to reporters there had been discussion of removing O'Brien, but indicated it didn't have much of a chance.

"It wasn't well received," he said.

O'Brien is not expected to retain his position now that Democrats have expanded their majority in the House.

Smith ran against former Speaker of the House John Perzel for the position.

Slander suit against Morganelli possible, Smith says

HARRISBURG -- State House Minority Leader Sam Smith (R-Punxsutawney) raised the possibility Wednesday of filing a slander lawsuit against Democratic attorney general candidate John Morganelli.

Smith said Morganelli has repeatedly accused his caucus of wrongdoing in connection with "Bonusgate," which the minority leader flatly denies.
